AT&T activating 'FaceTime over cellular' to all customers: report

Summary: AT&T appears to have switched on FaceTime over cellular to all iOS 6 customers, even grandfathered customers with unlimited data plans, and those with the iPhones 4S, who were previously excluded.

Good news for AT&T customers with iDevices -- the carrier appears to be extending FaceTime over cellular to all iPhone customers.

AT&T announced earlier this month that it would enable FaceTime over cellular for customers "with an LTE device" on a "tiered data plan" using iOS 6. This caused a bit of a stir because it excluded both grandfathered customers with unlimited data plans, and those with the iPhones 4S handsets.

MacRumors' forum users report that the feature has been quietly enabled. Forum user "kre62" appears to have been the first to notice the change [sic]:

In a recent thread we were discussing AT&T members getting facetime with LTE devices and tiered plans. However I noticed today that I have facetime over cellular and I have an unlimited plan on my 5.

I just turned off my other phone, a 4S and turned it back on, only to find the switch flipped to ON for facetime over cellular. Both phones work perfectly over cellular.

I also checked a few coworkers phones, all now have FT over cellular.

If you have ATT, turn your phone off and back on and report back if you now have FT over cellular.

Several other forum users have conformed "kre62's" findings, while others claim that it they can't enable the feature. (iOS 6 only supports FaceTime over cellular on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPad 3 or higher.)

I've reached out to AT&T for comment on this possible change in policy, and will update this post when I hear anything.

  • Not Working

I am on the grandfathered unlimited data plan with iPhone 5. However, I do have iOS 6.1 installed. I did a hard reset twice and the facetime switch under cellular is still flipped to off.

  • Not Working yet...

I sure hope this is true...I have an iPhone 5 with grandfather unlimitedd , daughter has iPhone 4 on wifi at home. Tried to connect. Cant. I sure thought LTE network was all big and bad and I'm very upset of this restriction. I see on my settings i can use Facetime for Celluar as On, but when I try I get the "use wife" pop-up. So, waaaaahhh!!

  • How is Face Time working on WP8?

Microsoft fans love being able to make video calls to desktops, tablets and handsets across any OEMs devices.

    • Do you mean Skype?

Skype has been my work around for FaceTime being limited to requiring a Wifi connection, since I too have the "unlimited" plan on AT&T. I still cannot connect using FaceTime with my iPhone5. Skype works well and includes connections to non-Apple products, but I'd like the convenience of using FaceTime too. I just don't get to use it with AT&T, due to an unnecessary restrictions, which is one of the reasons I likely won't stick with them.

  • FaceTime Cellular worked yesterday-Today, no......

I have both the ipad 3 and an iPhone 4S and BOTH worked yesterday on cellular and today are rendered useless. After a "hard reboot", both devices will automatically show "FaceTime" switched to "on" but after a few seconds will switch back to "off" and when manually switched to "on"- you get the dreaded "blue blurb of direction" to contact AT&T to switch plans. Thought we were onto something yesterday but I guess AT&T still hates "early adopters".
