update National Australia Bank is experiencing an online banking outage, while its subsidiary UBank has had its website knocked out completely.

The root cause of the outage has yet to be disclosed, but an NAB spokesperson told ZDNet Australia that more details will be released very soon. The scale of the outage is also unknown at this stage. So far, the issue has affected in-browser and mobile banking access.

The spokesperson was unable to confirm whether the NAB and UBank outages are linked, but UBank recently moved its 300,000 customers onto NAB's Oracle core banking system. NAB, itself, is in the midst of a multi-year IT transformation process.

At around 9 a.m. AEST (4 p.m. PT), the bank announced through Twitter that it had been receiving reports from customers that were having issues accessing the online banking, early this morning.

As of 10:22 a.m. (5:22 p.m. PT), NAB's internet and mobile banking portals were still inaccessible.

On Twitter, UBank said that it was experiencing some issues with its phone system and website. As of 10:32 a.m. (5:32 p.m. PT) the website was back online. The latest tweet from UBank said that the company was still working through its website issues.

NAB issued a statement to ZDNet Australia that said its services were returned at 10:30 a.m. (5:30 p.m PT).

"Due to increased traffic, some customers may experience some slowness when logging on to internet banking and contacting the Customer Contact Centre," NAB said in the statement.

Updated September 5, 11:50 a.m. (6:50 p.m. PT): Received statement from NAB.
