Starting on January 29, 2013, the NextGenCIO initiative will intake 50 IT professionals for an intensive, five-week online short course focused on the leadership capabilities that IT professionals must blend with their core technology knowledge to make a contribution to the success of their organisations.

Following completion of this course, five participants will be selected for a three-month mentoring master class from leading CIOs to gain unrivalled first-hand experience of the practical application of IT for business success.

The program will provide participants with essential competencies for career development, and ultimately aims to make a difference in the overall contribution of IT to productivity in Australia.

"The program will give participants an exceptional opportunity to benefit from a concentrated development program that accelerates their knowledge in a short period," said associate professor Mark Frost, head of the school of management and marketing at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

"It will allow experience of balancing ongoing education with the demands of busy jobs. For some, it may lead to a re-evaluation of their skill set, and a desire to continue with further education through additional learning such as an MBA. My team and I at CSU are delighted to provide a learning opportunity to 50 Australians who may otherwise not have had that chance."

The program is open to any current IT professional wanting to substantially enhance their leadership capabilities.

Participants should be IT professionals with around five years' experience, who have a determination to progress and can fully commit for 2 to 3 hours per week to the course from January 28 to February 28, 2013, and to the subsequent mentoring, if selected.

More information on how to nominate yourself or one of your team members can be found on the NextGenCIO site.

In the coming weeks, ZDNet will add further detail about the student-selection process, and the curriculum, educators, and mentors.
