Bamboo wood back option appears for custom Moto X

Summary: Many have been waiting for the wood back options on the Moto X and yesterday a bamboo option appeared on the Moto Maker site.

While I enjoy my custom navy and orange Moto X there are a lot of people holding out for one with a wood back. 9to5Google first posted the news that a bamboo option was available for a $100 premium.

This morning when I went to the MotoMaker site the bamboo back option, under the natural category, now shows as 'not available' and will no longer let you select this back color option. There was no definitive shipping date for the wood back and now we don't know when it will be available for ordering again.

There are also rumors that three other wood options may eventually be offered to customers. There are not any opportunities for existing Moto X owners to switch to a wood back, which I am sure many people would pay the $100 premium to have done to their device.

The wood back is a cool idea and some of the rumored wood options I have seen are attractive. I am perfectly happy with my navy blue and orange Moto X and won't be looking to replace it with a wood device.

  • $100 ???

Get the same effect along with broader range of woods
and MUCH cheaper to replace when it gets damaged,...
    ''wood tone contact paper''
    • forgot...

      I just re-remembered.
Real wood veneer also comes with self stick backing.
      STILL cheaper than $100
      • Also think...

....about the impact that this will have on the environment.
  • More than Looks, Wood is Warm to Touch

Of all the hard materials that we use, wood is the only one that is warm to touch. This is because wood at a microscopic level is full of small air spaces making it a kind of thermal insulator. It does not suck the heat out of your fingers as fast and feels warmer than it actually is.

Wood tone contact paper would not even come close to the feel of real wood. As with all insulators, how well it insulates depends on the thickness. If a real wood veneer it to thin then the insulating properties would be lost.

If the wood has a hard plastic finish that really seals the surface it would loose some of the warm to touch properties. If the finish is really thick it will be no different than any plastic.

Harder woods are colder to touch than soft woods. The warmest feel comes from bare soft woods. Of course these would be the most susceptible to damage. The trade offs between durability and warmth is a really difficult.
