BBM for Android and iOS released, sign up for the queue now

Summary: There haven't been a lot of lines for BlackBerry devices in the past, but for some reason there seems to be a lot of excitement for BBM on Android and iOS.

BBM for Android and iOS released, but you must get in the queue first

BlackBerry has teased launching BBM for iOS and Android for a while now and today is release day, as reported on BlackBerry's blog. Even though you can download it to your device, you can't use it just yet.

I enjoyed using the BlackBerry Q10 and even the Z10, but still only have about five BBM friends on the BlackBerry platform. That said, I refreshed the Google Play BBM for Android page until I was able to download it on my Note 3.

Installing and then launching BBM for Android just gets you into the queue as soon as you enter your email address. I have been in the queue for about an hour and have no idea when I will get the email giving me access to BBM so I cannot talk about my experiences with the app.

The bigger question for me is, will I finally get more than five friends on BBM? If I do, it's certain that those friends are not running it on BlackBerry hardware.

  • Do you

know people still using BBM? I know it is popular in Africa and parts of Asia but I have only one friend who still uses BB for personal use. He is a diehard physical keyboard guy so he's there as long as he can get a BB!

    • Exactly

Who wants this? Who needs this? Who cares? Who doesn't already have IM on their smartphone?

      • BBM Users

BBM for iPhone is the #1 Tope Free iPhone APP in the UK and Canada, and #2 in the USA.

BBM for Android hits 1 Million installs in under 24 hours.

It seems that people are using it.

  • not impressed

you have to wait to use it, it doesn't have video chat or voice chat on the iOS and android versions, you can only use it on 1 device, and apparently it won't work on tablets. BB did a bad job with this app IMO.

Seriously RIM, what have you been doing for the last 5yrs taking a siesta? I have one person left on my friends list that is still using a blackberry and that's because their contract isn't up until the end of December. There is no way I download this app to communicate with this one person. We use regular text on occasion and whatsapp mostly which feels like BBM

    • 5 years eh...

Sounds like you've been away from BBM for 5 years with your comments. Comment if you know what you're talking about. I'm a BBM power user and I'll tell you, with the new Z10 (Waiting for the Z30 to come to Rogers), I can't wait as a great many iphone and S4 users I know (ex Blackberry people), can't wait as they miss it.

      • What!

The numbers don't lie. BBM is a has been. Sure many are going to download it because soooo many people have been waiting for this to happen and they want to see what it’s about. This is something that RIM should have done even 3yr ago when I myself asked their DEV team to do this and you know what their answer was "We have no current or future plans to develop BBM for any other OS outside of BlackBerry." No wonder they are almost dead because they fail to think outside the box until now when they've lost 3/4 or their market share and still falling not climbing. The numbers don’t lie. I think you need to wake because you’re obviously in a slumber “BBM, BBM, BBM, BBM”

BBM has chat, Groups & Group Chat, file exchanges and Broadcast Chat (to all Contacts) already, with Voice/Video to follow in a future update.

Over 10 Million iPhone and Android BBM downloads in the first 24 hours.

    Yeah, no one's using it...

  • BBM is great, love BBM Groups too.

BBM is great, I hate texting and WhatsApp (not on all platforms) or whatever it's called isn't as secure and I think you have to give out your email or phone # to people.
