RIM's BBM Music was released back in 2011 and I personally really enjoyed the sharing and discovery aspects on BlackBerry devices. I was hoping it would come soon to BB10, but now we hear that it will be discontinued on 2 June.
The email from BlackBerry to existing subscribers reportedly includes the following:
BBM Music service will be discontinued as of June 2, 2013*. For paying customers, April is the last month that you will be billed. In May, as your BBM contacts stop using the service, songs in your playlists will begin to turn grey and will no longer be available.
The full email content can be found in this CrackBerry.com forum and as you can see, April is the last month customers will be billed.
BlackBerry recommends people try out Rdio and is giving a 30-day pass. This makes sense for current BBM Music subscribers who use the service on a pre-BB10 device, but with Rdio not yet being on BB10, I would think BlackBerry would encourage people to use a service like Slacker Radio that is available on old and new BlackBerry platforms to help when people make the transition to BB10. Maybe Rdio has their application coming to BB10 soon, but if you are looking for an alternative I recommend trying Slacker Radio too.
Were any readers users of BBM Music? For $5/month, I personally enjoyed the sharing aspect and found it helped me gain BBM friends through music. I am a fan of discovery and listen to many genres of music, so it fit my needs perfectly. If it was launched on BB10 I would have been a subscriber again too.
