Thanks to Thunderbolt 2 and fast SSDs the new array is fast - LaCie claims 1,375MB/sec - the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 sports two SSDs in a RAID 0 config.
The device's performance and Thunderbolt 2's bandwidth enable editors to work with 4k video - edit and display - on a single Thunderbolt 2 channel. The Little Big Disk lets videographers work with 4k RAW files, getting full quality from footage and seeing the edits in real time on a 4k monitor.
LaCie - a Seagate subsidiary - claims videographers can capture 250GB of 4k video in the field and transfer it into post-production storage in under 10 minutes.
The Storage Bits take
Thunderbolt 2 is a pro interface, for people for whom time is money. In my experience - I use both Thunderbolt and USB 3 - Thunderbolt is not only faster but more stable.
But the real importance of this announcement is that LaCie, along with Promise and other Thunderbolt vendors, have clearly found the Thunderbolt market to be profitable and worth further investment. For pros the extra cost of Thunderbolt peripherals pales next to the time savings and extra reliability of the interface.
Comments welcome, of course. I love the speed and price of USB 3.0 external drives, but for performance my two Thunderbolt arrays are way ahead.
