1Password adds Dropbox syncing

By | August 10, 2010, 4:00am PDT

Summary: 1Password now syncs with DropBox and the two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Here’s how to do it.

dropbox-1p-200.pngI learned a great little tip at the last PPUG meeting: 1Password now syncs with DropBox! First some background is in order:

Agile’s 1Password ($40, my review) is the hands-down best password storage application for the Mac and it syncs with its $10 iPhone app ($9.99, App Store, my review) so you always have your passwords at your fingertips.

Dropbox is the phenomenally simple cloud storage service that provides 2GB of free storage space (50GB costs $10/mo., 100GB costs $20/mo.) that you can seamlessly access from Mac OS X and via a free iPhone app.

The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

Instead of having to manually sync 1Password to an iPhone over WiFi, the encrypted 1Password data file can now be stored on a Dropbox for all versions of 1Password to access. Boom. Instant syncing between your Mac and iPhone, over the cloud, for free.

Here’s how to do it:

After Dropbox is installed, go to the 1Password > Preferences > General window and click Move. 1Password will ask you for the new location of the data file. Specify the Dropbox folder (or a subfolder within it):

FileSync is better than Dropbox
Jeff-Net 10th Aug 2010
If you don't need this 1Password feature, FileSync is a much better option.

FileSync works like Dropbox, except it works over FTP... which means it can sync file no matter where you are... even driving down the road. Dropbox and the likes require that you're within your network to sync files.

Filesync syncs with an FTP server, so it works anywhere, anytime.

I've been using DropBox to host my 1Password keychain for over a year. So my iMac and my MacBook always have their passwords in sync. In addition, from any computer with Internet access, I can log into www.dropbox.com, drill down to the 1Password directory, and open the 1Password.html file (1PasswordAnywhere) located there to view all my 1Password information.

Dropbox DON'T require that you're within your network to sync files.

DropBox is exellent... But I prefer use of the open source and free KeePass password software I put its encypted database on my Dropbox and I can get my password through my mobile phone that use KeePass and Dropbox and that even on the road or anywhere on the planet...

Simple and free!!

Keepass support the following OSs:
- Windows
- Mac OS
- PocketPC
- Linux
- J2ME
- iPhone
- BlackBerry
- PalmOS
- U3 Devices
- Android
