The clock keeps ticking for Macs based on PowerPC processors as Apple’s recently released iLife ‘11 content-creation suite is now Intel-only.

The hardware and system requirements of the update are detailed in iLife ‘11: System requirements support note. The first item in the list is a Mac computer with an Intel processor.

As far as I am aware, the last PowerPC Mac shipped in the summer of 2006. That’s ancient history in computer generations, although many of these machines are still working away.

There are some other caveats in the iLife ‘11 hardware department. The software requires 1GB of RAM installed, which shouldn’t be a problem even though many early Intel machines shipped with only 512M RAM. If they are still running (and most are), most must have been upgraded.

Other items in the hardware list are more puzzling.

For example, there’s an item that says that the Learn to Play feature in GarageBand requires an “Intel Core Duo processor or better.” As far as I am aware, there are no Macs with “less than” a Intel Core Duo, which was used in the first generation of MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Mac mini and iMacs that was Intel-ized. Perhaps they mean Intel Core 2 Duo?

It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appearance. I must say that you've done a excellent job with this. In addition, the blog loads very fast for me on Internet explorer. Outstanding Blog!
Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your weblog? My blog site is in the very same niche as yours and my visitors would really benefit from a lot of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this ok with you. Thank you!

I think they are excluding the first generation Mac Mini that shipped with a Core Solo processor.

The first generation of Intel Mac hardware used Core Solo and Core Duo processors, the Mac Mini being the only machine with the Core Solo as an option.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lion drops support for these machines (Core Solo/Duo) when it's released next summer. I'm actually surprised that Snow Leopard didn't drop support for them already, considering that the Core based machines are 3-4 years old and 32-bit only, and Snow Leopard runs much better in 64-bit kernel mode.

My G5 1.8GHz (single core) is 6 years old. It's had a hard life but there's no upgrade in the offing, not even second-hand. I DO like to be able to pay my bills.

@Laraine Anne Barker Well, Leopard and the current software that works on the Power PC Macs are STILL better than most Windows offerings!

My PowerPc 1.8 G5, running Leopard. With a copy of iLife '08. Does everything i need. But i want something Apple for Christmas. I am trying to decide between an iMac, Mac mini, or an iPad. Since i am retired, my greenbacks are limited.

sdfasdfNow, if the daughter had her contacts stored in her Mac's Address Book or on the MobileMe cloud, there's just no need for her to reenter those manually and I strongly doubt that the Genius employee would have suggested it. Thankfully the iPhone/iTunes sync features give this extra level of redundancy, but you have those sync features turned on, and you have plug your phone into your computer once in a while.
