Apple releases Mac OS 10.6.8 update; required for Lion

Summary: Apple yesterday released Mac OS 10.6.8 and its a big deal because it's required to upgrade to Lion. Back up, repair permissions and install it from the 1.3GB combo updater.

SHARE:

Apple yesterday released Mac OS 10.6.8 and its kind of a big deal. Apple is requiring that all Macs have 10.6.8 installed before they can upgrade to Lion. Mac OS 10.7/Lion is scheduled to be released in July as a 4GB download from the Mac App Store.

Rather than installing 10.6.8 from Software Update, I recommend that you instead download and install the larger, 1.09GB "combo" updater (link updated) -- but only after fully backing up your machine and running Repair Disk Permissions in Apple's Disk Utility.

The 10.6.8 update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

  • Enhance the Mac App Store to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion
  • Resolve an issue that may cause Preview to unexpectedly quit
  • Improve support for IPv6
  • Improve VPN reliability
  • Identify and remove known variants of Mac Defender

For information on the security content of this update, please visit: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

Mac OS 10.7/Lion will be available next month for $29.99 for all personally registered Macs.

This may be a duplicate ? if so, sorry. The link for the 10.6.8 combo updater in the post is for the Server version. The link for the "Normal" version is http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

  • My hacks have been updated.

Repairing permissions after an update is a good practice as well.

Say, what ever happend to your Psystar? You're the only one I know that bought one.

My dock took 100% of CPU after update. Maybe related to my running Parallels. See apple support for os snow leopard.

This update does what? Man don't upgrade till Lion comes out, you save yourself software bugs and other compatibility issues.

  • Dummies

The dummies at Apple. Unlike other companies, Apple fails to include this updates as a prerequisite on the Lion DVD [I'll assume it's not there - otherwise this blog would be useless - right?]. Yes, this also used to fix the bunch of problems, vulnerabiulities and malware that is now plaguing OS X. So it would be useful even if you aren't rushing out to buy your copy of Lion.

Why wouldn't somebody buy Lion when it comes out? It's only 30$. Also, this fixes other vulnerabilities and adds some other things.

@Gis Bun There is no DVD. Lion will only be available as a download from the App Store.

People have already figured out how to make a DVD from the download so as to allow for a bare install--or you could just boot from an external disk and run the installer.

@Gis Bun Apparently the "dummies" at Apple can't hold a candle in dumbness to some Apple haters out there.

Lion is an App Store-only upgrade, which requires you to have the latest version of Snow Leopard to run the upgrade at all. So there is no "Lion DVD" for the update to be bundled on.

Jason, Can you elaborate on why you recommend installing from the combo updater rather than "Software Update"?

@DJL64 I was wondering the same thing. Just curious as to why the full package download is the "best practice". It kind of sounds like "common sense" / rings true - but would love to know the reasoning behind the recommendation.
