Dell to offer 12-month warranty extension on GeForce 8600M GTOn 8 August 2008 I reported that some MacBook Pros with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPUs were failing prematurely. Today Dell extended the warranty on their notebooks that use the chip.

According to a post on setteB.IT (Italian | English translation):

Dell will offer 12-month limited warranty enhancement to all worldwide customers of 15 laptop with defective Nvidia GPUs. These Dell laptops use nine models of graphic processor unit, only one of them is also used on MacBook Pro models (15" and 17"), sold from mid 2007 to now. It's the GeForce 8600M GT (from 128 to 512 MB). What is Apple doing for these customers and why Nvidia doesn't say the name of all defective models

  • Dell & HP have made good on this issue...

So where are all the rest of the vendors that used these admittedly faulty GPUs?

    Apple, Lenovo, Acer, Sony, Gateway....

    Whats's the deal?

Ditto. Apple should extend the warranty of the MacBook Pro with this issue. I had Apple replace mine recently because of this and I was covered by AppleCare. When I got my MacBook Pro from Apple they change the GPU from nVidia to a ATI. Below is my current System Profile of the Graphics/Display:

    ATI Radeon X1600:

    Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
    Type: Display
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x71c5
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-158
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.158
    Displays:
    Color LCD:
    Display Type: LCD
    Resolution: 1440 x 900
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Built-In: Yes
    Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Display Connector:
    Status: No display connected

Again, I hope that Apple takes a hint from Dell & HP and extend the warranty to the MacBookPro owners since problems may not occur within the standard warranty period and they should hold nVidia accountable for this problem.
