Facebook to release iPad app; rains on Friendly's parade

It's almost impossible to believe but more than a year after the iPad's debut Facebook still hasn't released a native app for the blockbuster Apple tablet. The official Facebook app for iOS (iTunes, free) was available when the App Store opened in July 2008 and has over 78 million monthly active users.

FB claims over more than 250 million users actively access the service from a mobile device.

The problem is that the official Facebook iOS app is only formatted for the small screen. What's an iPad-toting FB junkie to do?

Oecoway Inc. has been able to fill the gap up until this point with its iPad-native Friendly Plus for iPad (iTunes, $0.99) but it's a dud. I barely use Facebook and can't stand it, and my hardcore FB friends call it everything from terrible to barely unusable. A shame really.

Apparently the sleeping giant has awoken.

New York Times' Nick Bilton writes that Facebook is indeed developing an iPad-native app and has been working on it for almost a year. (I'm betting that they've been working on it since the day that the iPad came out.)

People who have seen the application said it has a slick design that has been tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. Facebook developers and designers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the application. And the app will go beyond the features available on the Facebook Web site by allowing users to shoot and upload photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.

“The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images,” said a person who has seen the app.

According to Bilton, the Facebook iPad app is now in the final stages of testing and should be released "in the coming weeks."

It's about time.

I'm sure that the folks at Oecoway Inc. aren't thrilled about Facebook competing for Friendly's 2.6M active monthly users, but then again people want the best experience possible. If Facebook's going to be the one to deliver the best user experience, then that's where the users will go.

Do you give a rat's arse about Facebook on iPad?

Jeez. Finally. Hopefully, facebook's perfectionism will pay off. Friendly is okay, but it could be much, much better.

Yeah, it's about time. I use both Friendly and Friended but both those apps leave a lot to be desired.

      @MG537
FB clearly spent some time working on this. It makes sense for FB to develop that when ipad is getting more popular. You could have better experience when using the new iPad app. Beach Tent

Well, yes. I can't stand FB, but since I'm on it and everyone I know is wanting me to be their friend, I go on once in a while. The iPhone app is nice for the phones, I suppose. But they really needed to optimize for the iPad. I certainly will get it when released.

It's about time. The iPhone app on iPad pretty much sucks, so much so that I took it off and am just relying on the browser page in Safari which has its drawbacks too. This can't come too soon.

  • Not Really...

Not a FB fan. I use FB to track a few friends and relatives but Twitterific on iPad is where it's at for me and most of my friends.

It also sound like it put Apple icloud services to shame. Especially the sharing part, and I am sure the amount of video and photos you can store on the Facebook cloud will be unlimited as it is now.

I reckon it will make sharing videos and photos far easier than Icloud.

So given that it has these advantages, anyone wanna bet that Apple will fine a reason to ban this from there app store to stop it from competing with its own Icloud services.

With a headline like "...rains on Friendly's parade", I first thought that this app gave your iPad the ability to make ice cream or something. For a (banana) split second I finally thought I had a reason to buy an iPad. :-(

Finally, I don't go on FB a lot but when I do it is not a good experience with Friendly.

I'll be interested to see it. I'm using MyPad and it's actually not bad. Missing a few features though

  • Friendly is ok

Was incredibly unstable before the last update but now it's rock solid. It is basically like facebook lite- the way facebook should be IMO. I like the way the tabs work on friendly better than Facebook. My biggest complaint is that it is impossible to edit or remove certain things without going back to the regular Internet version to do it.
