Summary: According to a new rumor Apple is preparing its first iTunes Store redesign in three years. Will it challenge likes of Spotify, Google and Amazon?

Finally, an iTunes Store redesign is coming

If you think that the iTunes Store has devolved into a cluttered mess, you’re not alone. Apple apparently feels the same way because it’s prepping an overhaul according to a juicy tidbit out today. According to a new post at 9to5Mac Apple is preparing its first iTunes Store redesign in three years.

The new design is said to be even simpler and more user-friendly than the current design. Apple is working on ways to enhance the speed and efficiency of finding new content, such as songs, videos, and applications. The cornerstone element of Apple’s new iTunes Store is interactivity. As Apple vaguely explained to a number of music labels and entertainment partners, Apple is looking to make the iTunes Store a much more engaging experience.

In its last overhaul — circa 2009 — Apple launched its current offering which replaced a bluish design (see below) with a more traditional white interface.

Them in late 2009 Apple launched a new iTunes Store design (as part of iTunes 9) that moved its digital content front-and-center with a prominent carousel that displayed a rotation of featured content from the various categories that Apple sells.

The move to an overhauled iTunes Store will be welcome news to many users, especially ones that have migrated to other music services like Spotify (my current favorite), Google Music and Amazon MP3. And let’s not forget the sleeping giant: Microsoft’s bound to refresh MSN Music and Zune.net when the time is right.

What’s your take on the iTunes Store? What would you like to see in the 2012 refresh?

Biography

Jason D. O'Grady

Jason D. O'Grady developed an affinity for Apple computers after using the original Lisa, and this affinity turned into a bona-fide obsession when he got the original 128 KB Macintosh in 1984.

He started writing one of the first Web sites about Apple (O'Grady's PowerPage) in 1995 and is considered to be one of the fathers of blogging. He has been a frequent speaker at the Macworld Expo conference and a member of the conference faculty. He also co-founded the first dedicated PowerBook User Group (PPUG) in the United States.

After winning a major legal battle with Apple in 2006, he set the precedent that independent journalists are entitled to the same protections under the First Amendment as members of the mainstream media.

In addition, he has contributed to numerous Mac publications over the years, including MacWEEK, Macworld, and MacPower (Japan).

When he's not writing about Apple for ZDNet at The Apple Core, he enjoys spending time with his family in New Jersey.

I noticed you didn't post my comments regarding iTunes. I did notice a post this morning from someone else so I'm wondering, since my post was written in decent English with some valid points, why it doesn't appear here. Maybe I needed to end it with "Great Job Jason" or "Thanks for your amazing insight Jason" or "Can't wait to download your GarageBand mix from iTunes Jason".

I don't buy from Amazon or iTunes because

they don't supply lossless format (FLAC for instance) so I was hoping this was one of the features of the overhaul. Apparently not. Hyperion (one of my favourite labels) is the only place I've found so far. But thanks for the info, Jason.
