GPlayer fills the iOS void left by VLC

Summary: If you missed out on the short-lived VLC iOS app -- don't fret -- there's a solution for the venerable open-source video player.

GPlayer fills the iOS void left by VLC - Jason O'GradyDid you miss out on VLC Player for iOS?

The popular video player port was on the App Store for three months before being removed in January 2011 because Apple's FairPlay wrapper violated VideoLAN’s licensing agreement.

Fear not, there's a solution to replace the venerable open-source video player on iOS.

GPlayer ($2.99, App Store) supports playback of numerous file formats, including: XVID/DIVX AVI, WMV, RMVB, ASF, H264, MKV, TS, M2TS, and more. You can sync videos via USB or Wi-Fi and it supports TV-out and AirPlay.

The bonus is that it's a universal app, so it works on the iPhone/iPod touch and the iPad.

Update: GPlayer was free yesterday (May 22, 2012) now it's back up to its regular $2.99.

  • Check GoodPlayer -- it supports more formats, has very wide functionality

    The subject.

  • Downloaded it

But unfortunately it doesn't support opening files on smb share or webdav, sticking with XBMC, which does support this, is open source, and supports pretty much everything you throw at it. Jb required.

  • Great but...

For starters, it works. That's a lot to say for any iOS video player. It takes most popular video formats (for me, the best sales argument was MKV HD support), so that's also great. It's not for free, I must say. Then again, $3 dlls so you can take in your iPhone, iPod or iPad your Game Of Thrones episodes... well, that's not bad at all. The GUI needs some work, but what do you want for that kind of a price in a mobile device?.

  • IOS ?

iOS is not the only tablet-operating system, and GPlayer appears to be just another program that requires the user to port data back and forth from one device to another. Has everyone forgotten what "cross-platform" means?
