How the smartphone killed the clock radio
Summary: I don't know about you, but my iPhone has completely replaced my clock radio. There's just no reason to have an alarm clock on my nightstand when I charge my iPhone there every night.
I don't know about you, but my iPhone has completely replaced my clock radio. There's just no reason to have an alarm clock on my nightstand when I charge my iPhone there every night.
Many have subscribed to this type of theory for years, eschewing a wristwatch for the ubiquitous clock that appears on the front of practically every digital phone ever manufactured. The logic being, why wear a wristwatch when I always have my phone with me?
Each night before I retire I tap on the Clock app on my iPhone, set the appropriate alarm, then plug it in to charge. It's a perfect system that has rendered my old school Sony Dream Machine obsolete.
I've found an interesting solution that turns the new school iPhone back into an old school alarm clock – Kensington's Nightstand Charging Dock for iPhone ($39.95). It's a 30-pin dock connector on a right angle connector that props the iPhone up at a slight angle in landscape mode for nighttime viewing. A free corresponding app, Rise&Shine is available in the App Store that turns the iPhone into a dimmable clock radio with three different number styles. My favorite is the retro style flip-clock.
The app also displays the current weather for your zip code and the five day forecast with a tap on the icon. The alarm time is gleaned from the Clock app so there's no need to set that again, and it disables the screen lock function so that the clock doesn't turn off after a minute or two.
I set Rise&Shine to the lowest brightness setting and it's still a tiny bit too bright for my tastes. But then again I'm overly sensitive to having too much light in the room when I sleep.
Kensington's Nightstand Charging Dock is an interesting and functional accessory that kills two birds with one stone and it frees up an expensive dock connector cable in the process. While it's not perfect it works for me, and if you're unsure you can always try Rise & Shine for free first.

I Still Use My Clock Radio
The irony
Considering the iPhone is one of the few smartphones not to include a radio, that you believe it to have killed the Clock Radio is ironic to me. :) Please don't take this the wrong way, I know that iTunes has replaced the radio (except on the Nano) and you can get internet radio and blah blah blah, I just found it humorous that you chose the word "Clock Radio" when "Alarm Clock" would have actually been more appropriate. That Rise & Shine app actually looks quite nice. :)
Anyway, my friend has been using his iPhone as his alarm clock for a while and the big problem is that it has frozen in the middle of the night and he slept in. No, it doesn't happen often but I've never, even once, had a regular alarm clock freeze on me. And most of them have battery backup so as long as the power comes back on before the alarm is set to ring, even power outages aren't an issue.
Besides, if something is really important for me to wake up for, I'll usually set 2 alarm clocks and my smartphone. Paranoid? Perhaps, but I haven't missed an appointment yet!

radio". The experience of the author (one of this sites Apple
bloggers) is with the iPhone. He is hardly going to write about
Windows Mobile if he's not used it, we get that you do however. I'll tell
you what. If you don'tlike Apple products, the company, any of it's
employee's or people that do like Apple's products stop reading
blog posts and articles about them. Every time I read something that
you have written it reads like the work of an educationally sub-normal
gimp. On the rare occasion that you actually write something of value
to a debate, you punctuate it with kind of inane fanboyism that you
indirectly accuse those that use Apple products with. The real irony?
Your username - pathetic...
The app looks cool
And you've never gotten a wrong number call on your cell phone at 3 AM?
