I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

Summary: Intelliborn's IntelliScreenX, coming for iOS 5, is an amazing app that adds new functionality to the iOS 5 Notification Center -- including adding it to the iPhone lock screen

IntelliScreenX might be worth jailbreaking for - Jason O'Grady

Watch the video below demonstrating Intelliborn's IntelliScreenX. It's an amazing looking app that adds new functionality to the iOS 5 Notification Center and makes it available on the lock screen. Other features include a pretty slick quick setting widget (top of the screenshot above), collapsable sections, an auto-updating Twitter ticker and full pages for Twitter, Facebook, Calendar and Mail.

The bad news? It's a jailbreak app. It's expected to be released next week and I think that I'm going to jailbreak my iPhone 4 just for this app, it looks like a lot of fun.

Looks great just bare in mind that the only jailbreak for iOS5 is tethered and still has a few kinks to be worked out.

@michealjohn40 Actually, this is a pretty terrible article! IntelliscreenX has been available on Cydia for 3 years! This blogger is just trying to "de-value" Apple's new notification centre so he can trash it down the road! This blogger's not as smart as he thinks he is. He's just taking advantage of your ignorance! SMH

Actually IntelliScreen has been out for years not IntelliScreenX. IntelliScreenX is specifically for iOS5 to enhance its already good Notification Center. I must say as a long time jailbreaker, there's functionality I'm used to with packages like IntelliScreen that iOS5 just doesn't provide yet.

Really? I'm trying to "de-value" Notification Center? I love Notification Center, but I can also imagine what developers could do if Apple exposed the API. Unfortunately, Apple hasn't exposed the API so innovative developers (like Intelliborn) have to resort to writing jailbreak apps.

Rather than typing some rubbish about "taking advantage of your ignorance" - you should be asking why Apple hasn't exposed the Notification Center API to developers!

The real question is why can his be an app available without jail breaking your device?

    • RE: I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

      @bws605

It violates Apple's app policies by accessing system API that Apple has not given access to. It also circumvents the sandbox model Apple has put in place as a safeguard (control) mechanism.

Some good ideas with this app...however, there is a reason that the lock screen is called a "Lock screen". Obviously if you are not concerned about security or warranty issues with your $700 iPhone then jailbreak away...good luck!

    • RE: I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

@tsivalls : Agreed and another point of a "lock screen" is to hide your information from prying eyes with a lock code or password or at least lock out access to functions like editing or deleting emails.

It is a personal choice as to whether display incoming email messages in the default lock screen or not but at least it does not give access to "all" of your email.

I don't see the value if this Intelliscreen X quite frankly as it defeats the main purpose of a "lock" screen. I see it as a security hole people willingly install as it allows you to delete email without unlocking the phone first.

It seems to me that these guys are trying to make themselves and jail breaking relevant now that Apple has basically implemented their old intelliscreen functionality into iOS 5 along with alert tone customization.

To get around the whole warranty issue, just perform a factory restore, your warranty will be intact.

    • RE: I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

@tsivalls Jailbreaking is not like taking your iphone and dropping it in water. People who understand how it works would understand the 'security issues' are minimal. Jailbreaking actually forces Apple to fix security issues they would have probably overlooked. People also develop security fixes themselves for people to use. It allows you to have access to the API of the system so people can change actual phone settings that Apple would not allow you to change themselves. This will let you do anything from having an adblocker on safari, to skinning the phones look, and running a gameboy emulator. The experience is different for everyone and the reasons people do it are just as vast as the possibilities it opens up. I can understand it is not everyone's cup of tea to mess with their phone, but the vast majority of people who try it will love it. Another great thing developers do is create a thing called settings in their apps :O They will most likely add a preference for people to select if they want it to display in the lockscreen or not. The app is not going to be like Apple's idea of how things work. Use it how we want you to or use it how we want you to.

btw jailbreaking doesn't really hurt your phone's warranty. If you need to return the phone to Apple you can plug it in and restore it. If you drop it in a toilet or off a building and it won't turn on they will not be able to identify it is jailbroken. It is not like you paint a big Void logo on your phones screen :)

The idea of allowing reading, deleting emails without unlocking the screen sounds like a BAD idea to me. I use a passcode to unlock my screen for a reason... privacy. With this app, anyone who picks up your phone can read your tweets, emails, delete and it wouldn't surprise me if you can send tweets and emails, without unlocking the screen. Just think of the malicious stuff "friends" could do with that!<br><br>Cool ideas for when you use the Notification Center in an unlocked screen but not on the unlock screen. I also don't like the idea of bypassing Apple's prescribed security measures.

What a lame reply! If you weren't so ignorant, you would know that's a lie. The only security flaw is people without the brains to properly jailbreak and modify the root/mobile passwords. Next time, get a life and do some research before you start spewing your 'tardism!

  • RE: I might jailbreak my iPhone for IntelliScreenX

Eh don't really want to jailbreak my iPhone for such an app.

And it actually looks like it does TOO MUCH while on the lock screen.

It allows you to read, manage, and delete emails - while the screen is still locked!

This means that anybody who steals your phone can manage your emails without having to bypass the lock screen!!

That pretty much defeats the entire purpose of the lock screen. The whole purpose of the lock screen is to prevent people from messing with your stuff if your iPhone falls into the wrong hands.

Don't get me wrong: I like some of the features it provides. Being able to select what goes on top and being able to collapse notifications is cool.

But - being able to manage your emails and social networks is not.

The notification screen should only be about notifying you, especially while the phone is locked. Non-notification stuff (deleting emails, sending tweets) should be only available when you unlock the phone.

@CobraA1 IntelliBorn has made a number of apps and the one thing they have in common is the ability to chose what features you want to be running. I am pretty sure they are aware some people are really uncomfortable with their emails and social media being so openly available.<br><br>That feature is more meant for people who don't put a passcode on their phone because they really don't care. I've had smartphones for over 6 years and have never had my phone stolen or lost. If someone takes my phone it isn't that big of a deal you can remote wipe it or track it with GPS. There are even more jailbreak apps that will allow you to find your phone like Apple's built in tracking software.<br><br>One of these such apps is called GotYa. It takes a picture with the front camera and gives you the gps location. Having that picture could be helpful in a place like a shopping center. Just remember this app is supposed to adjust to your preference not the other way around. You could even remove the social media, email, and text messaging from the notification area and just use it for an RSS reader and adjust your brightness. It is supposed to setup to your liking.

@bearofsilly <br><br>"If someone takes my phone it isn't that big of a deal you can remote wipe it or track it with GPS."<br><br>Assuming they aren't smart enough to switch it to Airplane mode right away. Can't remote wipe it if you can't communicate with it.

The best way is to have a code on it and use the 10 tries feature. I've never had to try 10 times, so it's a sure sign somebody is trying to get in.
