iOS 4.1 beta 3 released; iPhone 3G loses Game Center

By | August 4, 2010, 9:27am PDT

Summary: iOS 4.1 beta 3 was released to developers on Wednesday. Sadly the iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch devices won’t be compatible with Apple’s Game Center app.

iOS 4.1 beta 3 was released to developers on Wednesday. Sadly the iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch devices won’t be compatible with Apple’s Game Center application upon its release. The latest 4.1 beta seeded to developers yesterday reportedly removes support for Game Center for older handset models. In previous iOS4 betas the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch were capable of running Game Center.

Apple’s Game Center app is a social gaming network feature added to iOS 4, which can provide a centralized experience for gamers on the iPhone and iPod touch — similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live. Game Center, which went live in June and is scheduled to launch later in 2010 promises to allow gamers to invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through matchmaking, track their achievements, and compare their high scores on a leader board.

No word on how b3 addresses the iPhone 4’s nagging proximity sensor bug.

Worried about iPad v.1!
trickytom2 4th Aug 2010
Dam that ****** 256Mb of RAM in the iPAD! If the iPhone3G sucks running iOS4 with 128Mb of RAM, can the iPad be that much better with 256Mb? I'm worried that the higher-overhad apps being developed for the iPad will suck up RAM and cause the same issues that were seen with the 3G and iOS4.

I'm hoping for a 1Gb iPad v.2 in the Fall.

@trickytom2 And yet another mock concern post about a product you will never buy from a company you dislike...

Somehow I think the iPad will be able to handle iOS4 just fine... sure it has only 256MB ram (twice what the iPhone 3G has) but it also has a faster processor than the iPhone 3G. Bottom line, your concern is noted but is unwarranted.
@athynz

It has a faster processor than even the iPhone 4. No stress...

With Mac OS X (and most UNIX-derived OSes), it's not the processor that always makes the difference but the amount of RAM. Had Apple stuffed 256 MB to begin with into gen1 iOS devices, and 512 MB or 1 GB into gen2 and later iOS devices, I think the issues with iPod Touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3G would be non-existent. I also think the first gen iPod Touch and the original iPhone would still be supported by iOS4 (though this is Apple...)

iPad should handle iOS 4 better than a iPhone 3GS, but i think our winner will be iPad 2 with more memory and an even faster processor.
@trickytom2 There are a lot of people out there that hate Apple for no other reason that to hate but my god man. To use a term I used to hear a lot online they live rent free in a lot of minds but I think they must have a complete corporate campus in your head.

For what it's worth to all those out there that don't have a small minded view on things and are haters, I have a 3G with iOS 4 and it runs great. Did a minimal amount of tweaking by shutting down some search features that I don't even use and it's pretty much as fast as it was before the update.
Is there any indication that iOS 4.1 will remedy the problems of a 3G phone running iOS 4? So far all I've seen are improvements scheduled for the iPhone 4.
