iOS 4.1b3 outs iPod touch hardware refresh

By | August 19, 2010, 4:30pm PDT

Summary: Apple’s iOS 4.1 beta appears to have exposed some potentially juicy new rumor-bait via three new “Configuration Descriptors” that list Apple as their manufacturer. Mmmm, rumors.

Any time Apple releases beta software a cadre of curious developers comb through the code searching for signs of new hardware. The iOS 4.1 beta is no exception and appears to have exposed some potentially juicy new rumor-bait.

iOS 4.1b3 includes three new “Configuration Descriptors” within its USB configuration files that list “Apple, Inc.” as their “manufacturer.”

The fourth-generation iPod touch is referenced within the code as “iPod 4,1″ meaning that it will be the first iteration of a fourth-generation device — rather than a revision to the iPod touch’s existing design (which would have a configuration descriptor of ”iPod 3,2.”) AppleInsider thinks that the 2010 iPod touch will look like a slimmer iPhone 4 with dual cameras, FaceTime support, Apple’s A4 processor and Retina display.

The second reference is to “iProd 2,1″ — a second-generation iPad. The original iPad (released in April 2010) had a configuration descriptor of ”iProd 1,1″ prior to its announcement. The third reference is to “unknownHardware” with a unique Apple product ID of 20547. This is presumed to be the new iOS-powered iTV that is rumored to succeed the current Apple TV.

While it’s likely that Apple will announced the new iPod touch and iTV at Apple’s annual music and media event next month, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see the second-generation iPad referenced in the strings until the Spring of 2011. It’s simply too soon.

We could however finally see iOS 4 for the iPad as soon as next month. Although AI said that iOS 4 for iPad won’t arrive until November, Apple promised it in “Fall” — which officially begins on September 21, 2010.

IMHO Apple won't do a mid-range touch screen device any time soon. Between the iPod touch and the iPad they have so much success that their isn't a good business case to be made. Maybe in the future when they can produce more iPads than they can sell, but even then I doubt it.

I read the rumor about the Google tablet supposedly coming out on Black Friday.

And suddenly I started wondering about iPad 2.0.

Why the delay putting iOS 4 on the iPad 1.0 ?

Could it be that iOS 4/iPad version is being tested on iPad 2.0 prototypes and that's the cause of the delay?

(Adding a dual camera and SD card slot would require a bit more 'apple polishing' for iOS 4.)

If iOS 4 for iPad really is slated for November...

That might imply that iPad 2.0 is intended for surprise early release in November, JUST before Black Friday.

  • Interesting perspective
    @Jkirk3279

This could very well be the case. They've done it before with the iPhone, releasing a new revised version in a record 3 months after releasing the iPhone 3G. There iPods also saw crazy update cycles.

I expect them to show the new iPod Touch with cam (facetime) and retina display in September. Together with new iPod nano for the holiday lineup. I'm guessing they will then announce this revised iPad. This may be the strongest lineup leading up to the holiday they've ever had (including the recently announce selling like candy iPhone 4).

These slow moving competitors announcing tablets sometime in the future just don't get it.
