iPad 2 to quadruple resolution to 2048 x 1536

By | January 17, 2011, 4:00am PST

Summary: New information suggests that the upcoming iPad 2 will in fact get a 2048 x 1536 panel running at 260 DPI, double the amount of horizontal and vertical pixels as the iPad 1.

New details have trickled out about Apple’s upcoming iPad 2’s resolution. It had been previously rumored that Apple’s second-generation tablet will inherit the critically-acclaimed Retina Display from the iPhone 4. The problem is that a 300 DPI, 9.7-inch iPad would need a resolution of 2560 x 1920 - more pixels than Apple’s top-of-the-line 27″ LED Cinema Display.

New information suggests that the upcoming iPad 2 will in fact get a 2048 x 1536 panel running at 260 DPI — double the amount of horizontal and vertical pixels as the iPad 1. Apple may still brand it as a Retina display because the iPad is held further away from your face than an iPhone, resulting is the same effect.

MacRumors reports the discovery of pixel-doubled bookmark graphics in Apple’s iBooks app:

Version 1.1 of Apple’s iBooks application seems to have accidentally included some artwork for this hypothetical pixel-doubled iPad. As shown above, the App’s bookmark icon included versions for the iPad, the iPhone and the iPhone Retina Display (iPhonex2). It, however, also included one additional version labeled “iPadx2″. Sure enough, this is exactly double the resolution version of the iPad icon and is distinct from the other versions.

MacRumors also spotted another tell-tale graphic in iBooks 1.2, a 1536 x 800 pixel wood-tile background. The previous Wood Tile.png in iBooks 1.1 was half of that - 768 x 400 pixels.

So called resolution “doubling” should be easy for developers to support, allowing legacy apps to run in a pixel-doubled mode until developers can re-write them to support the iPad 2’s larger panel. Apple the same thing with the iPhone 4, increasing its resolution from 480 x 320 to 960 x 640.

Now i am in essence really recent new to wp. but that which you publish on this webpage log is really nfljersey fantastic and fairly helpful.
Eventually you get to the point of diminishing returns. If the cost is negligible then fine, but I don't think I'd pay extra for 2048 x 1536 on a 10 inch device.

It's easy to understand, actually.

@Michael Kelly
With the increased resolution the amount of information that can be displayed on one screen is also increased. Unlike fixed or desktop displays, you can vary the viewing distance for a handheld device easily. If you hold it at the right distance it can appear to be the same size as a 27" display, assuming it has the resolution to show the same data on the screen.

What is happening to the word "number"?
Economister 17th Jan 2011
Why do so many people use "amount" when they mean "number"?

Correct usage would be "number of pixels", not "amount of pixels".

From Webster-Miriam dictionary

@Economister

Amount - noun

a) the total number or quantity : Aggregate

"The use of amount with count nouns has been frequently criticized; it usually occurs when the number of things is thought of as a mass or collection"

If the author was referring to the total collection of pixels on the screen, it seems to follow reasonable guidelines for usage.

Just my humble opinion.

Tablets are ripe for advances

Apple has shaken up the market with the iPad and money for R&D is going to flow in for some time to come. The improvements in the iPad2 will just be an indicator of things to come, but if they add in two cameras, FaceTime and double storage then I'll be buying.

iPad v1 resolution is terrible
NonZealot 17th Jan 2011
The first time I saw the iPad, I was immediately struck by how poor the resolution was. This will help a lot.

However, this fragments the iOS market even MORE!! Multiple devices, multiple resolutions, multiple sizes, each with different capabilities. iOS is now hopelessly fragmented.

If this makes iOS "hopelessly fragmented"

Every OS is.

That's the point though

@goff256
All the Apple zealots say that other OSs are fragmented because they have multiple resolutions, multiple screen sizes, devices with different capabilities. However, they also claim that iOS isn't fragmented.

iOS is fragmented. Just like Android.

Good point
Michael Alan Goff 17th Jan 2011
I'd argue that Android -used- to be fragmented, but is now just as fragmented as anything else (ie not at all).

What's funny is
sackbut 17th Jan 2011
@NonZealot

that Apple now has these people in "rental mode."

PROCEDURE bend-over
They buy the product, then six months later Apple changes it just enough for these guys to cream all over themselves. Now they "have" to have the new product.
LOOP to bend-over

Sounds like Android World
Bruizer 17th Jan 2011
@sackbut

Since phones take months to never to get OS updates (why Android is fragmented beyond recognition) the only way to upgrade your 4 month old Android to a new release is to buy a new phone or wait 12 months to never.

@sackbut
I assume by this comment that you don't monitor smart-phone technology. My Driod was obsoleted months after I bought it. Progress in the mobile market is very fast. If Apple had not improved the ipad guys like you would be complaining that they are falling behind their competitors.

Android. Hopelessly fragmented...
Bruizer 18th Jan 2011
@NonZealot

And it has nothing to do with the number of different devices as you so wonderfully lie about.

Here is what it means:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913045

New devices are still shipping with Version 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. At the same time, 2.4 is announced for May with a new branch in 3.0. So in 3-4 months, we will have 7 shipping versions of Android installed in new devices.

Of course, Apple products keep getting better, while MS products just get big, fat service packs.

I think 2048 x 1536 is a bit much for this 10" tablet, but its what Apple will need to do to have the same visual experience on the iPhone. Since the iPad is an eBook, a Retina Display will be practically necessary.

Speculations are rife that iPad 2 would be lighter and faster than its predecessor and may include a USB port, front facing camera, and 3-axis gyroscopes. Meanwhile, images of a new iPad case have appeared online that seem to show space for a SD card slot.

Also, there were rumors that Apple is readying a "world iPad," implying that it will run on both GSM and CDMA networks. Incidentally, Verizon, one of the iPad's carriers in U.S., uses CDMA technology.
So many rumor about ipad 2.And I've expected for a long time.Right now I come across a interesting game can get a free iPad 2:http://www.facebook.com/espowcom?v=app_28134323652
