iPhone 3GS launch in Atlantic City - 1ATLANTIC CITY -- There were about 20 people waiting in line when I arrived for the iPhone 3GS launch at the Apple Store at The Pier in Atlantic City at 8:00 a.m.

Although the outgoing message on the The Pier's voicemail said that the store would open at 8:00 a.m., they opened an hour early and staffers started taking the first iPhone customers at 7:00 a.m.

About 20 people were waiting in a line which formed outside at the right employee entrance by the 7:00 a.m. opening. Apple was putting people into two lines, once for those that had "reserved" an iPhone 3GS in advance and one for those that had "pre-qualified" online. By the time I arrived at 8:00 I the line was still about 20 deep and staffers were allowing anxious customers in via the outside service entrance at the Pier two or three at a time.

The line moved relatively fast and I was in possession of my brand-spankin'-new 32GB iPhone 3GS (in black) after a little less than 30 minutes of waiting.

Pictures from the launch are posted in this gallery. Some additional iPhone pictures are posted on my Twitter account.

  • Only 20 people?

There were more people in line waiting for the last Harry Potter book.

Apple should have timed this to coincide with the expiration of customers's two year service contracts.
    • Let's Open Up the Suggestion Box

Assuming that you were truly offering helpful advice to a company
you wish to succeed, this is only 10 days short of that anniversary
(June 29, 2007). Since this date applies only to a maximum of
1,000,000 US iPhone users, some of whom may have subsequently
updated to the 3G, it probably doesn't matter when considering the
millions of people around the world for whom some other date started
      their contracts with their carriers.

I'm on day 706 of the 731 day contract, so I can wait if I want to save
      some petty administrative fee.

This date does put 11 (6 weekend) shopping days into the current
quarter, as opposed to two for the anniversary date. I wonder if there
isn't some boosting of quarterly results by choosing this Friday as
      opposed to next Friday.

Any way, that's the best I could do with about five minutes of thought.

For what it's worth, there were 30 people in line to get in the store at
1:00 pm outside the Apple Store south of Hollywood, CA. I couldn't
tell you how many were there for the phone, the Harry Potter
computer game, or a new MacBook Pro. I am confident that none were
in line for "Beedle The Bard."

Wow! Apple gave you an iPhone! I'm surprised. Maybe they are not worried that you will use the software in an illegal way like you did with your Dell Netbook?

    Lucky you!

p.s.: I love the iPhone 3 software. But then again, I do things legally!
