iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down (update: it's back online)

Summary: The Apple online store is down pending an update to accomodate iPhone 4 pre-orders. Will you be ordering one?

It's 1:30am here in the eastern part of the U.S. and Apple's online store is "being updated." The updating is undoubtedly to accomodate pre-orders for the new iPhone 4 -- which Steve Jobs promised would begin on June 15, 2010.

I thought that I'd stay up a little late and get my order in (32GB his and 16GB hers) after the clock struck midnight but it's been over an hour and I'm going to get some z's. Maybe he meant 12:00 midnight pacific time?

Regardless, the store should be back up soon and you'll be able to place your iPhone 4 pre-order any time now. Wait, you are pre-ordering an iPhone 4... right?

If you are, what model? If you aren't, why not?

Update: The U.S. Apple store is back online complete with iPhone 4 pre-ordering. Curiously, you can only pre-order the black model for delivery, the white model is for in-store pickup only.

• Wow, Android looks great and iPhone looks terrible!

@Uralbas
Thanks for that list, everyone who has fallen for Apple's advertising should read that and go with the better option: Android.

@Uralbas Your list is full of bullshit. You have some points, but please limit to them only! The ONLY elements in the list that weren't bullshit are:
> Cloud Sync (only apps)
> Google SkyMap
> Google Docs (less for iPad)
> Hotspot
> Choice of providers (not Belgium, Italy and maybe some others)

Let's revise the rest:
-VideoChat on 3G/4G -- FaceTime will be available on 3G after 2011 (I'm talking international here too!)
-Flash (Froyo) -- Flash sucks and Steve said some real things. Let's not create crap for phones.
-Swype (Evo) -- You're dreaming: it's so bad writing on it!
-Faster JIT (Froyo) -- iPhone 4 will be lightning fast, you didn't even try it. And it's NATIVE!
-Gesture Control (All) -- I'm doing to much stuff with my fingers right now, let's go to voice.
-Google Translation (All) -- Free apps available
-Google Voice (All) -- I don't need an additional phone (number) on my phone; plus I've got Skype.
-Google Navigation (All) -- Tom Tom and tens of other GREAT apps. Do you live on Earth?
-Voice to Text (all but Samsung) -- search for "Dictation" on the App Store
-Text to Voice (all but Samsung) -- search for "iTranslate" on the App Store
-Authentic PDF reader (All) -- Mac OS X and iOS have both a native reader
-Multiple accounts (2.1 and above) -- Do you live on Earth (again)?
-FREEDOM (All) -- Let's free all prisoners and malware creators!
-REAL multitasking -- I really appreciate if my phone lives for at least 8 hours, not 1 hour.
-60% free apps 50000 -- Do you live on Earth (3 times)?
-8MegaPixel Camera -- Interpolating software and 5 MP makes a great geotagging iPhone -- Do you live on Earth (4 times)?
-Camera Flash -- Do you live on Earth (5 times)?
-Removable microSDCard -- I don't want my phone getting bigger. Plus: there are accessories. Plus: iOS was not built on a file mechanism: there's no Finder.
-External Storgare -- Why do you write the basically same thing twice?
-Built in projector -- Go buy one! Even the Apple Store has some great ones.
-Multicore -- We aren't talking about computers! We're talking about mobile! And battery!
-2GHz processors -- We aren't talking about computers! We're talking about mobile! And battery! (again)
-Froyo -- You're full of shit. I can't stand stupidity anymore.
-8hr + Battery life real multitasking -- iOS's multitasking is so great it only consumes 1 hour of battery. The iPhone will support 10 hours of usage, so if you take one, I beat you!
-Something better than gesture control -- Are you talking about mind control? Well, you have to finally accept that your time machine hasn't worked yet!

-All that Apple can dream of and wont have -- You totally don't have a life.

P.S.: What I'm trying to say is totally fair. I said iPhone and iOS has some problems and I said Android has some problems. I discovered recently also that there is a difference between stupidity and "fan boy" stupidity. Please tell me you're of the second category. Or else, I'll be sad because I tried to correct a total idiot.

• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

I have the iPhone 3G but have been contemplating the Android for some time now because I desperately want to switch to Verizon. There are a few reasons I will be going with iPhone 4 instead of any Android phone:

Immediate updates - When Apple releases an update every phone receives it. The Icredible has to wait for Froyo to be developed for HTC
Battery Life - I don't want to have to plug my phone in during the middle of the day. I use my phone for everything and the current Android phones don't last all day for what I use it for.
It's the 4th generation - I don't like buying first generation technology and the only Android phone I like right now is the Incredible

• One problem with your logic

@jweb12
When Apple releases an update every phone receives it.

Apple delays the release of iOS until it works with every phone, they just don't tell you about it. For example, maybe iOS 4 worked with the iPhone 3G 6 months ago and Apple has spent the last 6 months trying to make it work with the 3GS? You don't know that. With Android, Google releases the update as soon as it is ready and if you are lucky enough to have a phone that can get it right away, you get it right away. If your phone can't handle it yet, you might have to wait another 6 months. With iOS, Apple releases the update only when it works on the last phone so if you are lucky enough to have a phone that can get it right away, tough, you have to wait another 6 months.

With Android, only some have to wait 6 months. With Apple everyone has to wait 6 months. Google's approach is better, for more people. Apple's approach punishes everyone.

• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

@NonZealot I think the main reason for (almost) simultaneous release is that the App Store is complicated: not every update works with every release.

But you too exaggerate a bit. 6 months per device is way to much. They've got like 6 types and updating them every 6 months would be impossible to compare with the normal cycle. I'd rather choose 1 month per device. I'm not talking about iPhone and iPad.

This is not for geeks: There's a benefit too of holding updates longer in the pipeline: both app and iOS developers get more time to adjust the apps and the system in time. ;-)

• I still laugh at how bad Apple's OS X servers are

Apple can't even update their store without taking it down. Amazon must be LAUGHING AND LAUGHING AND LAUGHING at Apple's technical incompetence! :)
NonZealot
• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

@NonZealot Apple shuts the store down because the store is built completely, more advanced. Plus, tens of million of people visit the same page, what would result in a server crash or something during update. But you do have a point about shutting the store down for an hour?

P.S.: Your subject line isn't logical. It's not their Mac OS X servers that are "bad", but only the software running on them. I've managed Apple server for a while, and now I hate Windows Server (I'm not even talking about the price). ;-)

• iphone 4 pre-order is a joke

I've been trying all morning to get a pre-order placed. I also sat on hold on their phone system for over an hour and no go. The furtherest I got was to qualify for the new phone with my ATT account, but as soon as I clicked on purchase, it timed out and I had to start all over again and I never got any further than "sorry we were unable to complete your request, try again later"

• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

I do not understand why Andrid people is always attacking iPhone costumers. Andriod has a lot of things that iPhone does have, and the other way arrounf is true also. So stop competing. iPhone never talks about Android. It looks klike Andriod people cannot live without the iPhone, or making sure that they are better... What this is all about? Not enough with their phone, so they they have to talk about the best one? Let it go...

• android vs iphone

I am a geek, I love Google but I'm still sticking with the iphone for now. it really just is the better device still. Every generation android phones get better and I think next generation they will pass apple in probably most fields. Too me most of it comes down to responsiveness. Even the incredible is a little sluggish. Still faster than my current iphone 3g. but mine is 2 years old. Android really is the future it will beat out apple for the same reason windows did. It really is silly seeing apple make the same mistakes it made back then. But apple really has help all of us out but pushing the envelope hard and forcing all phone makers and providers to deliver a better product. I hope google tv does the same for TV providers.

• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

I've been able to use the Apple Store iPhone app to reserve a phone, but that's all. The site's store is still falling short (no order or reservation capability - only serves up error messages).

• RE: iPhone 4 pre-ordering imminent; Apple Store down

I tried several times on Tuesday to pre-order a 32Gb model. My first attempt was at 7:55am and last attempt around midnight. I finally tried again just a few moments ago and it was successful but delivery is now July 15th, so I cancelled my order altogether. I'm really sick of AT&T, their poor network, their ridiculous prices and the new, still no tethering and when it finally arrives it only if you give up your unlimited plan, their new very limiting data plans are the last straw... Verizon is no better, their prices are also ridiculous and their talking about limiting data usage. I'm done with this crap!!!

My next phone will be the Sprint EVO 4G, once my contract expires in July.
