iPhone 4 shipping emails indicate early arrival (updated 3x)

By | June 22, 2010, 10:52am PDT

Summary: Several customers that pre-ordered the iPhone 4 for delivery have received email notifications indicating that they’ll receive their precious packages on July 23 — a full day earlier than the worldwide launch.

Several customers that pre-ordered the iPhone 4 for delivery have received email notifications indicating that they’ll receive their precious packages on July 23 — a full day earlier than the worldwide launch.

One PowerPage commenter’s experience seems typical:

When I originally checked the order status on Apple’s website it stated it would be “delivered on June 24th.”  Two days later there was a message stating it had shipped and there was a link to direct me to the FedEx website for tracking purposes.  I checked a few times and there wasn’t much information other than where the package was located in transit.  Today there was a delivery date posted of “June 23rd, by 10:30 a.m.”  Skeptical, I called Apple, the representative I spoke with informed me there was nothing indicating I would not receive it on the 23rd, I repeatedly asked for assurance, and he did not change his tune.

To be thorough, I called FedEx, and spoke with two reps, a local one, and one from the international rep department.  The local guy told me that I will receive it on the 23rd.  I explained to him the levity of the situation, and that I found it very odd that a company with the stature of Apple would allow a device of this magnitude to be released to the general public prior to the widely anticipated release date of June 24th.  That’s when he passed me to the international representative.  The IR told me that while he can’t give me a 100% guarantee that it will arrive on the 23rd, it has been pre-cleared through customs (which is sometimes the one thing that will hold an item up).

During the runup to the iPhone 3GS launch last year, people received similar email confirmations from Apple — but without a specific date.

While I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, it’s highly unlikely that Apple will allow FedEx — its global logistics partner — to deliver one of the most highly anticipated pieces of mobile electronics in history in advance of the CEO’s publicly stated launch date of June 24, 2010. But then again, mistakes happen too.

Update: Engadget reports that some users breathlessly tracking their iPhone 4 shipments on the Fedex tracking portal are seeing notices saying that their new iron is “On FedEx vehicle for delivery.” Before rushing to track yours, two lines below it says that “Estimated delivery” is June 24 by 4:30 PM.

Update 2: And so it begins, at least one MacRumors forum member has already received their iPhone 4 in hand.

Ok, I’ll be the first to say it: Why did Apple hose users that elected to pick their phones up at the Apple Store?

Update 3: One of the early recipients has posted more pictures of his iPhone 4 on his blog and promises that a video is “coming soon.”

some are recieving their phones early to avoid another shutdown of the network when we all activate them. That way it could stagger the abuse of iTunes and ATT. I could see Steve authorizing that.

This is pure speculation...

But maybe Apple is allowing a certain amount to be sent early so that the activation servers do not get hammered on the 24th and have catastrophic failures like every year prior. I don't know which is worse for PR, not being able to activate your new phone or hearing/reading about people getting theirs a day early. I would guess not being able to activate the phone because by then, you have it your hands and seemingly cannot use it.

Not Uncommon

I have pre-ordered other things like video games and have gotten them a full day or two before the official launch date. My friend that works at Best Buy where I ordered my phone said their got their shipment last night and called me this morning. He is checking with the manager to see if somehow I can pick up mine early but he has to verify their systems can activate the phone or not. They will not let me take the phone home to activate as apparently Best Buy gets some sort of kickback on how many phones they sell and activate for the various cell phone companies. If the system (and manager) will allow it I could have mine tonight.

Jason -- The first paragraph of your story says "July 23." I think you mean "June 23."

I pre-ordered on June 14 at my local AT&T store at about 12 noon local time. Their order system was already down by then. My e-mail confirmation says the order was placed on June 15. Within the past couple hours, AT&T's order tracking newly provides a UPS tracking number. UPS doesn't itself yet provide tracking data, but it's a good sign!

Arrival, June 23rd.
brian_ 22nd Jun 2010
I ordered mine on the 15th of June at 1pm PST. The arrival date (via Fedex.com) shows that the estimate arrival date is the 23rd of June. With the shipment being sent out today with delivery type of "Standard Overnight".. Fingers crossed that it will arrive as stated.

The first sentence is incorrect...July 23rd?
WhatiswifiWhatis3g 22nd Jun 2010
Remember, this guy was blogging a couple days ago about how FaceTime would use AT&T data packages over wifi. Now he's got June and July mixed up. I can't wait to see what's next!

Spending time and effort tracking the package and calling all over the planet to confirm a 1 day difference? Ok..... yeah. Go mow the friggin lawn. Help an elderly person. Good God!
I have fed ex confirmation that my iphone 4 will be delivered on the 23rd before 4:30 pm. I am following the status with my tracking number that says it was shipped from fort worth, texas and is on it's way to North Carolina!

While my FedEx tracking says delivery by June 24, I received the following email from Apple Store today (June 22):

Dear Apple Store Customer,

You recently received a Shipment Notification email from Apple advising you that your iPhone has shipped.

This email is to confirm that your delivery will occur on June 23rd. Although Apple and FedEx tracking information may currently indicate a later date, you can check the FedEx website the morning of the June 23rd to track your package to your doorstep.

In the event that you will not be available to accept delivery on June 23rd, it may be more convenient to use our pre-sign delivery option by visiting our Order Status website at http://www.apple.com/orderstatus.

Sincerely,

The Apple Store Team

Some users have already received their phones as of June 22nd. (Doesn't zdnet following any real "news"?) The videos are already on youTube.com. Maybe zdnet will hear about them by Friday.
