If you thought that yesterday's rumor about a CDMA iPhone on Verizon Wireless was interesting then you'll love this one even more.

Two sources speaking to BusinessWeek have divulged that Apple is planning to launch not one, but two new devices with Verizon. The first is being called an "iPhone lite" (availability TDB) and the other is mini-tablet that could arrive as soon as this summer, alongside iPhone OS 3.0.

One device is a smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an "iPhone lite." The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection. One of these devices may be introduced as early as this summer, one person says.

iPhone lite? meh. But I'm all about a mini-tablet. Apple could single single-handedly own the netbook market if they sold these for $300. But it will cost more like $399 or $499, knowing Apple.

Does either one interest you?

  • Mediapad...

if there's no keyboard on the mediapad, it will fail miserably.

    • People just never seem too learn....

Why not go with the list that came for the iPhone. The keyboard was
claimed to have been an issue as well as replaceable batteries. There
there were specific features that the iPhone had too have that would
determine its success or lack there for of. Turns out all those
      predictions were in fact WRONG!!!!

Now Apple is not a sure thing. They have made some failures in their
time. Still over all when it comes to a new product from Apple its a
pretty safe bet to go with Apple in placing your money.

Oh and one other thing Apple has show time and again the
"conventional" wisdom is highly over rated.

      • If "conventional" wisdom always prevailed...

We would still be riding horses and listening to vinyl records.

OTOH if they tethered this tablet "mediapad" to cell phones and/or it included access to wireless broadband then they might have a winner on their hands. Perhaps just a "niche" at first with the frequent travelers looking to unload the laptops. I can definitely see it having a market in certain industries like health care, especially if they could pack a reliable voice recognition engine in it.

Not interested, the iPhone is actually good enough for light web surfing and the simple games. Can't see lugging another device around unless the picture quality is just eye poppingly good.

Not interested. At my age micro devices have no benefits for
me. The smallest device I would consider buying is the HP
dv2-1030 or Mac Air. The best all around device for a person like me is
a Mac Air or HP dv2-1030 with a 3G or CDMA capability. The phone
capability should be sans data link fees. That and a great over the ear
Bluetooth headset fits the bill. You should either have a phone or a fully
    connected device like those above.
