According to a report on The Consumerist "seemingly random iPhone users, from Manhattan to Idaho" have reported that MMS suddenly began working on their iPhones beginning on September 11. There's a nine-page (and growing) thread at Howard Forums starting by iPhone users whose MMS is now working.

Reports vary, but the common thread is iPhone OS 3.1 and AT&T carrier bundle v5.0 or 5.1 for MMS to work. You can check your carrier bundle version by tapping Settings > General > About > Carrier.

Mediaite surmises that the surge of MMS activations is due to "AT&T working through the process of removing the opt-out codes that have blocked MMS from working on iPhone accounts since the 3.0 release."

I reported here that AT&T began testing MMS in Washington around August 3.

While it's not surprising that AT&T would do a staggered MMS roll out -- I'm sure its trying to avoid the various activation fiascos that seem to occur around iPhone events -- it is a pleasant surprise if you're in a market where MMS is already working.

Is MMS working on your iPhone? if so, post your city, OS version and carrier bundle version in the TalkBack.

  • Working for me in ATL

    OS: 3.1.1
    Carrier Bundle: 5.1

But I cheated. Saw a blog posting late last week that
had directions on how to get MMS working (w/o jail
breaking) using a new carrier file...5.1.

However, it didn't work at first. It took about a day
to start working which would add credence to the fact
that AT&T is slowly "flipping the switch".

I've got MMS going on both my phone and my wife's.

  • It has been very cute to witness iPhone users

First, they gushed over getting 3G speeds. We sat back and smiled, having had 3G speeds for years.

Then, they gushed over getting applications. We smiled. They grow up so fast!

When copy and paste came, the cheer was unanimous! We felt your joy, having had copy and paste for years.

Now you are so excited about MMS that you are posting the very moment that you first had it enabled. Ah, I must admit it is pretty hard to think back to when we got MMS and how excited we were back then.

    • And equally as cute is...

Watching all of the Windows users out there carefully updating their latest virus definitions and timidly tip-toeing about the internet on timid, wobbly knees.

And how Vista, ah, Vista, XPs new little brother, born premature with health problems from the start. Poor thing never had a chance. He just withered away and died without the proper life support he needed.

And let's not forget the ZUNE! Oh, momma's big boy. Such a big, strong, strapping young man. But eventually, his bulk and weight became his demise...Poor thing. I think in another life, he could have been a mini-fridge for some frat guy's dorm room.

Seriously dude. The iPhone is one of the most sophisticated mobile devices in the world. It took a while with several revisions and additions along the way, but it's finally getting to where it needed to be in the beginning.

Lock it up. Hate the iPhone? Then why are you following the Apple Core's updates on the status of it and other Apple products.

Here in Brazil, specifically carrier Vivo Sao Paulo, it's working
fine, since you configure the correct address of MMS server.

    bye.

I bet AT&T is doing a gradual unannounced roll out so the
network load doesn't go haywire from all the iPhone users
the day of the "official" launch. http://www.computersncs.com/rd_p?p=186122&t=9530&a=28138-

HA! Good call dear friend, good call. Seriously that post was
as annoying as those "I'm a video developer, and I'm a PC"
commercials! You are a PC, and you're broke, and you suck
at 'developing' video (obviously)... because you're a PC!

Some things are not worth being stubborn about. I'll let you
test drive my iPhone if you'd like (in all fairness). And when
you try to run with it,... well, I'll find you. And I dont even
    need an app for that.
