iPhones: By their case, imprint ye shall them

Wonder which iPhone you're holding in your hand? A new Apple support note points to the differences between the iPhone, 3G and 3GS models. And don't forget the iPhone 3GS China.

The first iPhone has a metal case, so it's easy to pick out. However, the iPhone 3G and 3GS appear very similar on first look.

You can distinguish iPhone 3GS from iPhone by its plastic case. Additionally, the serial number is no longer on the back case imprint. You'll find the serial number for the iPhone 3GS on the SIM tray. You can distinguish iPhone 3GS from iPhone 3G by the imprint on the back of the phone. The entire imprint on the back of iPhone 3GS is bright silver (not just the Apple logo).

I don't get why all that verbiage is so prominent on the back of the iPhone 3GS. It looks terrible. The older 3G has a much cleaner look. Since most users put the iPhone in a skin or rubber case, the fine print on the 3GS isn't much of a problem, I guess.

Here's the support doc for the technical specs for each model.

You should take a little more water with your evening tipple before you write headlines, that one is just a mess. Perhaps it should be By their case imprint, ye shall recognise them?

I don't know why people do this. Why take a really nice looking phone and ruin it by putting it in a cheap, ugly rubber shell? It looks horrible and doesn't protect the screen (this goes for Android phones and other smart phones, too).

I prefer a leather case. It protects the whole phone really well, and when I'm using the phone, it's just the original nice design. No ugly rubber.

@RationalGuy I unfortunately have to use an Otterbox Defender at work or I'd be buying a lot of iPhones. The weekends however are a different story... I have a leather pouch as well or I'll use my green "Psych" silicone case.

I use a case to get some traction - if Apple put a TPU on the edges so I could grip the phone I'd give up on the cases. Frankly, I'd rather have some readable text - 55 year old eyes - telling me what I've got...
