France's controversial copyright law, which had threatened to mandate interoperability between Apple Computer and rival online music players' digital rights management, has been dealt a major setback as sections of the legislation are being ruled unconstitutional.

guillotine.jpgA proposed amendment to the French law requiring Apple to open it's DRM to competitors states that those being forced to open their DRM should receive compensation for doing so.

The Dadvsi Law, as it's called, has flipped-flopped on the legality of file sharing and fines for reverse-engineering DRM so many times that it's doomed.

    a major country or group of countries will force apple to open it's drm to everyone else. while this won't hurt the ipod, since the overall quality of the product and iconic status will ensure it'll be around for a long time, this will come back to hurt itms if one of the major competitors (napster, yahoo, ect...) figures out how to make a subscription service for itunes and ipod.

      the several record companies will tear up their agreements with Apple, and legal iTunes music downloads will be history. Then it will be back to PTP and other illegal activities, plus Rootkit packing. I'm not affected, since I buy used/pre-Rootkit music CDs and rip them to Ye Old Pismo. I also have a number of vinyl disks that haven't made it to CD...
