iPod nano 6G update adds options to sleep/wake button

By | February 23, 2011, 3:45pm PST

Summary: Apple just released software update 1.1 for the iPod nano 6G, but before you get too excited, it doesn’t add third-party app support. It does add a couple of nice feature nonetheless.

Apple today released software update 1.1 for the iPod nano 6G — but before you get too excited, it doesn’t enable third-party apps or anything cool like that. It does add a couple of nice feature though:

With iPod software update version 1.1 for iPod nano (6th generation), you will be able to:

Completely turn off the iPod, rather than just put the device to sleep.
Control music or radio playback using the Sleep/Wake button without having to look at the device.

With it installed you’ll now be able to turn the nano 6G off, instead of just putting it to sleep. This alleviates the problem of finding your nano dead after only being idle for a couple of days. But more interesting are the changes to the Sleep/wake button behavior.

With 1.1 installed a new setting (Settings > Music > Sleep/Wake Button) allows you to enable double-clicking the Sleep/Wake button to advance to the next track, or to play/pause.

And you can finally turn off VoiceOver hints in Settings > General > Accessibility.

I’d like to see the nano 6g get an accelerometer-actived Clock that wakes up when you lift your wrist. And how about some additional clock face options? I guess that we’ll have to wait for another update for those…

The 1.1 update is available now by connecting your nano to iTunes and clicking “Check for Update.”

Buggy wake to clock feature

The wake to clock setting only works if you're on the home screen when the iPod goes to sleep or isput to sleep, otherwise it wakes to Now Playing....very annoying!
And it won't BRICK your iPod!

I got my LunaTik & TikTok bands late last week, & it was the first time I'd played with the clock function in detail (it was the first time I'd REALLY used the Nano), & I'd have to agree on the watch face options.

BTW - reaction to the LunaTik band in the office was phenomenal. Could have sold a dozen Nano's there & then. Perhaps the next generation could simply include the watch band? Apple would sell many more units than they are currently moving! happy
This update caused my nano to automatically shut it self off after 60 seconds. You hit the play button and your song ends after 60 seconds... Very frustrating.... Searching the net for a fix...
