LED backlighting coming to a Mac near you

Current MacBook Pros and most other high-end notebook computers use cold cathode fluorescent backlights (CCFLs) to illuminate their displays and have for years, but all that's about to change.

The new kid on the block for backlight technology is LEDs which "consume less power, run cooler, and last longer than CCFLs" according to a story in DigiTimes (via AppleInsider).

The next revision to the 15-inch MacBook Pro will be the first to get the new LED backlights some time in the second quarter of 2007.

After they come out in Apple's workhorse MBP15, LED backlights are expected to appear in the 17-inch MBP and may even trickle down to the 13-inch consumer MacBook after that.

I'm all about any technology that delivers more battery life and it's well known that the screen is one of the biggest energy hogs on a notebook. Bring it on Apple!
