More on the Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 updateMy co-hort David mentioned yesterday Microsoft’s Mac BU just released the Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update which contains suite-wide stability, security and performance improvements.

I’ve been having some weird issues with Office 2008 for Mac since it came out. Including:

  • Certain documents crash Excel 2008 every time I print when they are opened from a Windows 2003 Small Business Server.
  • Excel 2008 will sometimes say “document not saved” when I try to save it. (see attached)

I’ve lost many hours of work to these pesky Excel 2008 bugs because I forgot to save my document before printing it. I’m happy to report that the Office 12.0.1 update appears to have squashed my particular Excel crash on print bug. (I emphasize appears because it’s only been about four hours and I’ve only tested some of my files.) Unfortunately, the crash on print bug persists.

According to Microsoft’s download page the 114MB update fixes critical issues in Office 2008, including issues that might cause Office 2008 applications to stop responding or quit unexpectedly. It sure does.

Microsoft’s knowledge base article 948057 offers a few more details:

The Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update contains several changes that improve security, stability, and performance. These changes include fixes for users of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and include fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer’s memory by using malicious code.

Apple should take a page out of Microsoft’s book on bug fix reporting and instead of telling us that a particular update “improves stability” or something suitably vague, actually tell us what it fixes! Imagine that…

More on the over 50 fixes in Office 12.0.1 after the jump…

  • Who would have thought?
That it was so bad it needed that many "improvements"?

Wonder how many more it will need, before it's up to par?

I still can't use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get this update on several separate systems on different networks. Yes, I do see it on their download on their website at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx

But needed to test to check if MS AutoUpdate will work properly automatically, hence Auto in AutoUpdate. It appears that Microsoft is not checking the AutoUpdate servers is serving the MS Office 2008 12.0.1 update. It appears that MS is still bias against Apple.

  • RE: More on the Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 update
The funny thing with MS Office 2008 for the Mac (with or without the update) is that it's very slick, but boy, there are so many bugs that I had to resort to MS Office 2004 for the Mac (less slick but much less buggy). For example, open a Powerpoint presentation and copy and paste some text on a slide to a Word document (that terminates Word without any warning!). Try to use graphics in a text in Word, for example text boxes, arrows, etc. When you want to move one object (e.g., an arrow), some of the other objects also move, with no reason (and I could go on and on). For simple word processing and spreadsheet documents, I now use Apple's suite (Pages and Numbers) and export these documents to Word or Excel. In my (recent) experience, Pages and Numbers work fine (and cost less).

The update did not at all improve the stability. In terms of
productivity in a PC / MAC environment the MAC version of
Microsoft Office 2008 pretty much is useless and counter
    productive. Very sad, very annoying.
