MWSF08: ‘Something in the air’ banner spotted

Wired's Gadget Lab caught wind of this cool banner flying at Macworld Expo's Moscone's South Hall today. The banner, which reads "2008. There's something in the air," is hanging above the escalators going down to the venerable exhibition hall.

Could it be an allusion to a new wireless product? ARS Technica thinks its "purchasing songs over the AT&T network when you are not browsing the iTunes Store at Starbucks."

My money is on Over The Air (OTA) software downloads to iPhone, no computer or iTunes required. Think about it. Nullriver's Installer.app already does this, why should the iPhone SDK take a step backward? And while we're at it, give the iPhone wireless sync for crying out loud! The thing ships with three radios but we have to connect a cable to sync? How 1999...

What do you think the banner foretells?

Apple is just not doing anything worth talking about. ust ask my MCSEs. I had them here all weekend rolling out Vista SP1 release candidates. We have been getting hourly builds from Microsoft and I have set up a command and control center. When you walk around here with all of these Vista machines, you can just feel something in the air.

Hold on to your hats ladies and gentlemen, Apple just invented the portable radio player. Is there anything that Apple can't invent? :)

Mac-Net, with 7% of the market there are now enough Macs out there to form a wireless fabric network, that will enable any Mac user to have random images of the Prophet Jobs posted to their desktops.

I hope it's just a 3G iPhone. I don't care if it's WiMax or UMTS (which is my guess since Cingular already supports it in the U.S. and it has wide support in Europe). It could also reference the GPS signals already out there, which would give the iPhone an accurate location. I sure hope so - the only reason I've been waiting to pick up an iPhone is the slow data connections they currently struggle along with.

Download software over the air? LOL. My Treo has done that for the past four years.

Oh, it also plays music and video, reads email, MS Office and Adobe PDF files, surfs the internet at high speed, and runs 14,000 Palm software apps, most of them free.

Man, Apple has sold you people a bill of goods.

Perhaps most do not realize the qualities of an outstanding salesman. It is one, who can sell you a piece of GOLD plated s---; make you so happy and glad you bought one; and only to go out and get your friends and neighbors to buy one too.

Once, when I made this comment to a salesman; I received the nastiest; dirtiest look from him. I must have hit a raw nerve!!!!

I hope that "Something in the air" is not a disease. My cold is bad enough!
Seriously I hope "Something in the air" that is Wi-Max but who will provide it, what coverage area and how much.

The original song (from the late sixties) was about the odor of pot in the air somehow starting a revolution. The revolution didn't happen then and probably won't happen at the Apple convention either. Of course maybe Steve and Woz are in the backstage green room...
