Yesterday the Snow Leopard (a.k.a. Mac OS 10.6) product page on Apple’s UK online store listed the ship date as “by August 28th” leading to speculation that Apple’s next-generation OS could be on the prowl as soon as next Friday.

The August 28 date also briefly appeared on Apple’s online stores in the U.S. and Canada but has since been changed to simply “September.”

The part number was previously leaked as MC209Z/A.

Snow Leopard will sell for $29 for Leopard owners ($49 for a family pack). If you purchased a qualifying Mac after June 8, 2009 with Leopard installed you can get a copy of Snow Leopard for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95 plus tax via Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program.

The Up-To-Date part number is MC204Z/A.

I have mine ordered and my invoice says "Delivery for August
28". The Apple store page still reads "pre-order for August
28 delivery".
So. I guess Apple thinks so, anywayz. It's easy enough to
check their site and see what THEY say.
If you learn how Apple OS's work, you'll understand what
you're buying a bit better.I think part of the price break for
"upgrade" isn't about a mini-version of the OS, it's just about
just having installed Leopard1 fairly short time ago.

They seem to be fully entrenched with the toy OS called Windows.

UNIX called a "toy operating system;" at least, not by anyone who
understands anything about computers.

Will it ship with Java 5?

Not every app can move to Java 6.

Ok users are just copying Java 5 off of Leopard onto SnowLeopard but still.

I don't need the hype but just want the facts!

I will wait to check for sales, however.

I thought all boxed copies...

...were upgrades only? The only way to get a 'fresh' copy is to buy a new Mac.

Snow Leopard is the first version of OS X to have separate pricing for
upgrade v. full install.

What?
Eleutherios 24th Aug 2009
My understanding is that if you run Leopard on an Intel Mac, you'll be
charged $29, whether you upgrade or do a full install. In other words,
when you put the $29 Snow Leopard in your drive (assuming you
qualify), you're invited to either upgrade or do a clean install (i.e., erase
your disk and install Snow Leopard from scratch). It's always been the
case with all the OS X releases I've bought over the last 7 years, it's no
different with Snow Leopard. The only difference this time around is the
fact that because Snow Leopard is not functionally much different from
Leopard, Apple has been willing to offer Snow Leopard for a token
amount to Leopard users.
