Apple released three updates for Mac OS X today, including:

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update - v1.9 - 2MB

This update is recommended for all 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models. The update resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation, and it improves compatibility with external displays.

The MacBook Pro EFI Update will update the EFI firmware on your MacBook Pro. Your computer’s power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source. When your MacBook Pro restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. It will take several minutes for the update to complete. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your MacBook Pro during this update.

Security Update 2010-005 - v1.0 - 84MB

Security Update 2010-005 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

iWork Update 4 - v9.0.4 - 71.2MB

This update is recommended for users of iWork 9.0, 9.0.1, 9.0.2, and 9.0.3. For detailed information on this update and individual application changes, please visit this site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4165.

Jason D. O'Grady

Jason D. O'Grady developed an affinity for Apple computers after using the original Lisa, and this affinity turned into a bona-fide obsession when he got the original 128 KB Macintosh in 1984.

He started writing one of the first Web sites about Apple (O'Grady's PowerPage) in 1995 and is considered to be one of the fathers of blogging. He has been a frequent speaker at the Macworld Expo conference and a member of the conference faculty. He also co-founded the first dedicated PowerBook User Group (PPUG) in the United States.

Likewise. When it's configured right, OS X has no idea if it's on a real Mac or not.

iWork exporting to ePub should worry Adobe. So far, Adobe has been the king of the eBook market with many publishers relying on their tools to create ePubs and with most of the major eBook stores using Adobe DRM (ADEPT) to protect the content. (Sony, B&N, Borders... etc) With Apple providing the only compelling and mature alternatives to both (Sorry, but Amazon's propritary format and DRM is a mess, technically.) in the forms of iWork creating ePub and FairPlay DRM through iBook Store (and the ability to self-publish to a wider audience than just yourself, something none of the other major eBook stores allow.)... Well, to me this looks like another opeining in this (sometimes silly) "clash of the Titans between Apple and Adobe, with Apple going after another significant (although less visable to the end user) portion of Adobe's business.

That said, I actually prefer ADEPT DRM'd ePub since it has more interesting features baked in. But not having to use InDesign for creating ePubs is pretty attractive.

Actually self publishing to the iBooks store still requires an ISBN number. Not that it is a difficult thing to obtain it's still the price of admission. Cover art is also another 'essential' for iBooks publication, at least if you want to get noticed. I agree the fact that Apple has made epub seamless now in Pages is a major step. I had spent days working with open source software only to end up with unusable product. Kudos to Apple again for making it easy.
