Track the election on your iPhone

Regardless of which side you're on, it's hard not to get swept up in all the excitement surrounding such an historic event. Since a presidential election only happens every four years, the anticipation is comparable to that generated by the Olympics, if not more so.

If you're the type of person that needs to have the most current information possible about tomorrow's election, there are a couple of iPhone applications that will keep you informed.

• Poll Tracker ‘08 (iTunes link US$0.99) delivers comprehensive up-to-the-minute data about the presidential election to your iPhone. It delivers the latest McCain and Obama polling numbers for every state, graphs historical polling trends, and charts voting patterns in previous elections. You can also sort states by how contested they are, how fresh their poll data is, or how heavily they lean.

• Obama ‘08 (iTunes link) (pictured, free) has a Call Your Friends feature that organizes your contacts by key battleground states and adds a field for notes on who you called, who they are supporting and if they want a reminder call on election day. It also contains complete coverage of national and local campaign news.

• Electoral '08 (iTunes link, US$0.99) is a simulator that allows you to quickly check possible outcomes for the 2008 election. Simply tap on a state and change it from red to blue (or vice-versa) and watch the total electoral vote count change at the top of the page.

• Vote Report (iTunes link, free) lets you send a quick report about the conditions at your polling place and thereby alert the media, officials, and watchdog groups of any irregularities which might need attention. Likewise, this will show all the places where things are going smoothly.

• Vote4Me pokes fun at our presidential election candidates and plays funny clips from each of them when you shake your iPhone. Too bad that it was rejected by the App Store on 30 October.
