VMware recently introduced a Mac version of VMware View, its Windows desktop virtualization product, as well as clients for Kindle Fire and Linux. In addition, the company updated its View client software for iPad.

The software is currently in a Preview version and the download requires a VMware login. It is Mac OS X Lion compatible.

According to the company, the VMware View Client for Mac OS X will support cut and paste between Mac apps and the virtualized Windows apps in View 4.x and 5.x virtual machines. Here are some more of its features:

- Support for Intel-based Macs
- PCoIP protocol optimized for VMware View 5
- Full screen support for Mac OS X Lion users
- Support optional RSA authentication
- Enhanced certificate checking
- Add up to 4 VMware View server shortcuts in VMware View Client

The company also released Version 1.3 of the iPad View client. Version 1.0 was released in March 2011. The list of new features was not visible on the VMware Community page for the product, however, in a blog post Pat Lee, VMware director of end user clients, showed a photo of the new 1080p support for display on HDTVs.

Combine the new 1080p video out feature with the Presentation Mode feature we introduced in the 1.2 client and you can connect your iPad to your TV and get a 1920×1080 Windows desktop right in your living room.

Guys: They supported View 4 on Intel Macs too - The article talks as if this is their first Mac client... It is not. They have not in the past, however, supported PCoIP on the Macintosh. This is the new "buzz" feature for View5 is cross-platform PCoIP and full Mac OS X 10.7 feature integration.

All VMWare clients, even the "Local Virtual Desktop" client, VMWare Fusion, have always required x86 hardware, so PPC Macs were NEVER supported with these products. The only real virtualization solution for PPC was Connectix/Microsoft VirtualPC products from the 1990s and early parts of last decade.
There're just now supporting Intel Macs? That's not a feature that I would want to promote but would be ashamed that my product didn't support years ago.

Engineering problem.

I'm pretty sure this is strictly an engineering issue - especially it it not possible to get decent (by today's expectation) performance of cross-architecture virtualisation of x86 on PPC host.
