VMware ESXi 5 introduces support for Mac OS X Server

Summary: VMware recently moved vSphere and ESXi to Version 5.0.

SHARE:

VMware recently moved vSphere and ESXi to Version 5.0. In the list of new features, the virtualized infrastructure will now support Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.

The release of vSphere 5 introduces support for Apple's Mac OS X Server operating system on ESXi 5.0, with the following support considerations:

To run Mac OS X in a virtual machine, ESXi must be running on Apple branded hardware. ESXi 5.0 introduces hardware support for Apple's Xserver 3,1 server. Supported versions include Snow Leopard 10.6 through update 10.6.8 with supplemental update v1.1.

In addition, deep on the virtuallyGhetto blog, I was able to find a screenshot of someone running Lion Server.

  • Need Snow Leopard on Lion capability

    Like many of us, apple's decision to not include rosetta in Lion, is highly problematic. Many of us have software we depend on where there is no lion compatible versions available and the alternatives just don't cut it. Is there or will there be a VMware solution for running the normal version of Snow Leopard in a VM under Lion. That would be something many of us would be interested in

    • Have you talked to your vendor?

      @bws605
      Try talking to your software vendor. Apple dropping Rosetta was not unexpected. Perhaps if enough customers complain, then the vendor will do the right think and support the new OS.

    • Where there's a will ...

      @bws605 ... there's apparently a way to run Rosetta under Lion. Saw something about it online the other day.

    APPLE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS WOES WITH THE DROPPING OF ROSETTA AND COMPANIES LIKE MICROSOFT LOVE IT BECAUSE THEY CAN BLAIM APPLE AND SELL THEIR LATEST SOFTWARE SUCH AS OFFICE 2011 FOR MAC WHICH WORKS FINE.

    Show me the VM running not with all of the servers turned off.this would be pretty easy to fake. Also what is the point when it has to run on apple hardware they discontinued their server grade hardware.
