WWDC 2011: Purchased Updates quietly activated in iOS 4.3

By | June 6, 2011, 2:55pm PDT

Summary: Apple quietly activated its new Purchased Updates feature in iOS 4.3 — without requiring a software update. When you touch the new Purchased link in Updates you’ll see apps you’ve previously purchased, but have not yet installed on your device

Try this on your iOS 4.3 device: touch App Store > Updates.  Notice anything different?

That’s right, Apple quietly activated its new Purchased Updates feature in iOS 4.3 — without requiring a software update. When you touch the new Purchased link you’re taken to a page that looks like this:

From here you can see which apps you’ve previously purchased, but have not installed on your device. The All tab distinguishes between apps installed on my iPhone, and in my case above, the princess apps that I installed on my wife’s iPad for my daughter. Touching Not On This iPhone displays just the apps that you’ve purchased and not installed on a particular device — as opposed to both.

I really surprised that no one found this feature previously, because it’s been there since iOS 4.3 was released.

Update: On the iPad, a completely new Purchased icon is visible to the right of Updates at the bottom of the screen. The iPad version of Purchased Updates also features buttons to distinguish between iPhone and native iPad apps.

Update: I was running stock iOS 4.3.3 on a GSM iPhone 4 and GSM iPad when I took the screenshots above. Several readers have reported both seeing the new Purchased Updates feature and not, so the feature may be rolling out slowly on a tiered schedule. If you do see it, post your device specifics and software version in the TalkBack below.

Must be systematic because mine doesn't show that yet. I did have to accept a new iTunes T&C however.

Update #1: GSM iPhone 4 on 4.3.1

Update #2: Just updated to 4.3.3 (had to re-jailbreak) and the feature is now there! Found some lost treasure.
I don't get it. Android has had this feature for over a year.

@Droid101 What part don't you get? Now the iPhone has this.

Also, the fact that this is now available for all music you have ever bought from iTunes is a pretty dramatic change.
@Droid101 and your point is?

Bad thing is that anyone browsing on your phone under the purchased area will see all apps you have EVER downloaded (paid or free apps). You may have long ago since deleted the app...some examples may be fart apps or free sex positions apps that you may have downloaded for whatever reason and then deleted because you didn't want them, and you may not want someone (friend, child, spouse) who is browsing on your phone to see.

@loveofallthingstech I agree. Is there a way to delete those apps that you don't want anyone to see?

Anyone know of anyway to delete the apps in the "purchased" area?
Working here with 4.3.3.

By the way, it also works with iTMS.

The point is... This.

Unfortunately, you missed the point of this quiet update. The App Store now displays not just all your purchased apps on your phone, but also apps that you have previously purchased and downloaded that are not on your iphone. So instead of having to remember which apps you have already downloaded you can go to "Not on this phone" and download an app directly from your device without having to sync to your iDevice. Yes, you could just browse for it in the app store and click download... but this cuts out a few steps and is much more organized. What they are trying to eventually do is to make it as PC-Free as possible so people who have iDevices won't have to sync to a computer... ever. They can just purchase an iPhone or whatever and activate it, download apps, re-download old apps they deleted if the want them back, etc., etc.
This is A GREAT feature! Simply because it REMEMBERS everything you ever purchased through your Itunes/Apple account. I had a PC (yes gasp) before and when it crashed I was pissed I never backed up any of my music. IT ALL WAS LOST! Until I was playing with my phone last night and Noticed the "Purchased" icon. It took me TO EVERY song I ever purchased through iTunes. I restored every lost song I purchased. AMAZING! Now with MAC and the introduction of Lion, iOS5, and iCloud-Apple has changed the playing field dramatically

Nice choice of apps by the way.

iPrincess, Princess Dress-Up. What, are you a 7-year old girl, or just enjoy dressing like one?

Just pointing out another reason for the "forget I ever purchased this, please" option.
