Reports have been pouring in for the last several hours.

AT&T BlackBerry service, which run on AT&T's not so edgy EDGE network, are really having a rough patch with connectivity today.

As BlackBerry board Pinstack reports via Engadget:

We're getting reports from all over that AT&T customers are having trouble with 3G and EDGE data. A majority of the complaints are coming from the Midwest / Chicago areas, where things seem to be down entirely, but we've also heard from folks as far away as Florida. Team Engadget hasn't hit any snags in New York or Vegas where we're currently situated, but let us know if you're having troubles wherever you might be -- and what color crayon to use for this fancy "threat level" printout we've got pinned to the wall.

Is your device, and connectivity, affected?

  • That Might Explain . . .

. . . the weird problems I was having with hitting the browser and IM services on my phone this morning from about 7:45 to 8:00 this morning. Full "bars", so it wasn't a bad signal. Rebooted the phone a few times, but just couldn't get connected. Then, mysteriously, pulled it out and tried it one more time at about 8:10, and it just went through -- ironically, opening to a news item about the net outage in Asia -- with no fuss nor muss. Not a problem since, trying it off and on through the day. Related to the problems out east? Not sure, but it sure sounds similar.

Point of interest to you, Russell: I don't live far at all from you, over on the Washington County side of things, so if this glitch is related, it did hit your backyard. Just that it sort of came and went here, while it seems to be lingering out east.

  • which is best?

Do you have an statistics on which of the major cell phone providers has the most reliable BlackBerry data service on a national level? Both in terms of uptime and actual bandwidth throughput performance?

Or are there some bigger-picture issues that might make this a difficult apples-to-apples comparison to make?
