markanderson220.jpgLast week I attended a dinner hosted by Mark Anderson, CEO of the Strategic News Service. Mark looks at the future of computing and communications in his newsletter and annual conference. During his remarks at dinner, Mark talked about 21st century pyramids, referring to the super datacenters Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are building in energy-friendly territories.

"The guys are building the pyramids, but they don't know what for. Is it for searching? No. An Internet Assistant delivered on a custom basis that tells us how to run our business and lives--how to get an edge is the ultimate best use of the real estate going forward," Mark said.

I asked Mark for more detail on his notion of an Internet Assistant (IA). Via email, he responded:
Today, the services we hope to get from the Web remain fairly mundane and "first order," i.e., where to buy and sell things, accounting help, etc. But large scale server farms have the potential to solve much more supercomputer-like problems, on a custom basis, throughout our lives:

1. Learning what we are like, learning how we best learn
2. Providing guidance in second-order problem situations, from running businesses to helping with negotiations.pyramid.jpg
3. Keeping track of our needs throughout our lives, so that we can spend time more creatively. This includes assisting where we may have insufficiencies. When you finish high school or college, the IA will know how you did in each course. Bad at algebra? It will help, just a voice activation away.
4. Less trivial, it may also warn us about health and other issues before they come up, based on global knowledge vs. custom knowledge about us. Plus provide financial assistance, which nearly everyone needs.
Think of it as a supercomputer "buddy" who helps you throughout your life. The step before that, which is probably what Google thinks it is shooting for, is a family of databases capable of customized delivery to you for your own needs.

Mark sees these early stage datacenters evolving into more intelligent hubs dispensing advice and ordering our lives, similar to the vision in Apple's Knowledge Navigator concept video from 20 years ago. One of the next frontiers for competition is the datacenter build out, providing infrastructure for planetary computing, serving hundreds of millions if not billions of simultaneous users on the Net.

There will be a group of companies that provide the commodity and unique technology parts to power compute utilities and those who have the expertise to deliver compute, storage and networks services at very low cost and high performance. Companies, such as HP and Sun, will try to do some of both, existing service providers powering large Web sites will try to grow their footprints, many regional compute utilities will spring forth, and large sites with their own infrastructure like Amazon, Google and Microsoft will have the capability to enter the service provider business in a big way and further cement their brand relationships with customers. Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud is an example of what's to come. Hopefully, the super- datacenter build out won't end up like the telecom build out, resulting in large, slow moving national and local monopolies with indecipherable billing plans...

IMPORTANT PLEASE HAND CARRY NEW VIDEO SPEECH HAWAII US SENATE PRIMARY RACE 2006 This NEW US and Hawaii Leadership inspirational speech for US Senate Race Hawaii provides a new path for hawaii and the nation in the international community. Listen to all of it for some real answers to our current position. TITLE US SENATE HAWAII 2006, Reaching the Goals and Visions of the People of Hawaii. Approved by Friends Eddie US Senate Hawaii 2006 DIRECT NEW US SENATE HAWAII LEADERSHIP SPEECH LINK: SPEECH DIRECT LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7cm8NAid5I My goal is to make a real difference in Hawaii US Senate leadership. Have a great day! Eddie Friends Eddie US Senate Hawaii 2006 Eddie Pirkowski US Senate Hawaii 2006 Candidate Direct Email: mauisenator@yahoo.com Eddie Pirkowski US Senate Hawaii 2006 Candidate Open Letter Platform Response to Debate Senator Akaka and Congressman Case. To all the people of Hawaii, a true leader focuses on those issues most important to the people, to reach all the dreams and goals of all the people of Hawaii. My leadership is in the style of Lincoln and Kennedy - to Stand up and reach top leadership in the US Senate for all the people of Hawaii. I humbly ask for your vote in this upcoming primary September 23, 2006. PLATFORM LETTER Hawaii US Senate 2006 GOP Candidate Eddie Pirkowski's Platform Creates Hawaii Leaders with Respect, Commitment, Trust, Equality in the Style of Lincoln, and, Kennedy. My US Senate Hawaii platform goals for the state of Hawaii are far reaching, and includes creating strong leaders in Hawaii that are respected worldwide. As one of the US Senate's Hawaii leaders, I will restore respect, trust and, honor in both public, private, and, nonprofit services throughout Hawaii, and the US, and thereby strengthen our defense with renewed respect on the world stage. It has been far too long for creation of Hawaiian sovereignty with respect for all, therefore I recommend immediate dual citizenship status (Dual US Hawaiian Passports) with appropriate US Federal, State, County, City Hawaii, and UN recognition. I will reduce Taxes for all ages and income groups, by increasing the minimum wage to $9.50 and the home exemption to $500k+ effectively doubling revenues to create a budget surplus of $1B+ for Hawaii. These funds will paydown real estate, and other taxes toreduce the impact on fixed income seniors, middle income wage earners, the young, and the poor. New community urban city revitalization programs will include new technology, industry centers, transaction grids, multi-use buildings, green walking communities, and low income housing with a goal of 100% independent services by community. New home incentives for owners to develop urban botanical gardens, victory backyard gardens including plants, vegetables, and native Hawaiian flowers and plants will revitalize neigborhoods and balance in family life. Entertainment infrastructure on the islands will include building new and updating existing sports /entertainment facilities by island to allow professional baseball, football, and soccer teams, movies, and world class concerts in Hawaii with the path for children to reach these heights clearly defined. An emphasis on the Police Athletic League (PAL) will bring both state, county and city workers closer together with the families of our islands. PAL will extend leagues from our children to our active seniors. These are the huis which create our family structure by community and need to be nourished to sustain respect of the youth and the aging for the leaders in our state, the everyday heros the moms, dads, grandpas, and grandmas, the ohana anties and uncles. The goal of creating 100% energy independence by Hawaiian island can be achieved using reliable, low cost solar tube technology (http://www.sbp.de) with 24 hour production capabilities of 50 MWe power generation per tube, 4 tubes per island will create 250MWe+ per island meeting the stated goal of 100% energy independence by island, complementing existing infrastructure. The power will be used to create desalination, and pumping facilities to distribute our water to regreen all our communities. After recycling, new advanced waste management techniques with a 500' rotating pipe can safely reduce and separate the islands paper waste volume significantly as in Rhode Island. Shredded, recycled waste tires will create new environmentally friendly rubber sidewalks, driveways, and guard rails on all islands. A new financial services industry in Hawaii, including a new Hawaii Stock Exchange (HSX) with partnerships with all major US, EEC, and Asian stock exchanges will create a new multibillion dollar industry here. Hawaii is perfect for the financial services industry with 24 hour trading partnerships with the leaders in the US, EEC and Asian retail, proprietary trading, private equity, derivatives hedging, banking, private banking, insurance, and investment banking communities. New state, county, and local paper digitization program to reduce paperwork storage requirements especially in the state, and county legal, engineering, and planning departments will create state and county office space in existing office buildings. Six sigma reviews for efficiency of all programs at both the state, and county levels will identify bottlenecks in services and reconfirm the strength and quality of our services to reach the needs of the people today and tomorrow. I ask for your vote for the US Senate Hawaii on September 23,2006, to create the leadership to reach your goals and community visions for today and the future. My commitment is to make each person's life better on all the beautiful islands of Hawaii, and to restore the peoples trust in our US Senate leadership,in Hawaii, the US and the world community. Because of the location of Hawaii, from New York and Japan, it is the perfect location for 24 hour trading worldwide to create a new Hawaii Stock Exchange (HSX) , with partnerships with US, EEC Asian exchange leaders. The State of Hawaii can use $100M+ of the current surplus to raise the credit rating for Hawaii. (currently AA- rating is highest in the nation) to reduce risk, reduce State, and County cost of borrowing, increase rates of return on investment, and prepay interest on long term debt. America was built on the strength, and creativity of its immigrant population, therefore I recommend immigration reform including restoration of respect to all citizens and, to provide all with a 100% path to US citizenship. To lead with strength, honor, trust, commitment, and respect at all levels of public and private endeavor is our goal. Hawaii's rich diversity of plants and animals provides a wealth of diversity with unique differences on all of the islands. This diversity creates a plant and animal genetic catalogue of all Hawaii native plants, and animals to guarantee our future with respect for our common past. New advanced transportation systems complementing our existing infrastructure will focus on independent green walking communities, with new private and, public buses, and increased route coverage for all our seniors and children to reach any part of our islands. I recommend the development of advanced transportation systems for 100% independent transportation by island for Air, Land, Sea, and Rail as the core of a reliable infrastructure for stable growth. In construction and planning, decentralized leadership of each islands county wait list by community based on the general plan ,and decentrallized control of planning will allow leaders by community to take ownership of and increase both the effectiveness and to reduce the wait time for planning and development of advanced green communities, and the needed infrastructures to support current, and plan for solid future needs. The specific focus of agribusiness will provide 100% of each islands Hawaii food, including production, operations, distribution with an immediate goal of 100% sustainable independence by island. Organic farming will ensure price stability with highly productive and efficient environmental farms. The replanting, and regreening of all islands will heighten the tourist experience, and the aina of the land for the people of Hawaii. The road to Hana on Maui must be regreened and tropical including developing all park areas and setting aside lands with long term large scale koa reforestation and unique botany tropical and regional projects for all islands. The beauty of our islands is unparalled, and needs to be replenished for a strong and beautiful future for our children. Thank you for this opportunity to speak my mind. I am standing up in leadership for each of you. Mahalo ! Aloha Have a great day! • Lets Hope Not

But given most people are sheep including tech people in the end computers and the people who control them will rule. Techs for the most part will be willing help mates for their political masters.

  • When - 50, 100 Years from Now?

The computer doesn't do a heck of a lot more than it did 30 years ago. We now have the Internet and computers are much faster, but do they really do anything different? We still have the same boring point and click at windows paradigm, and computers that crash at the drop of a hat due to poor code.
This vision will take a big leap. Much smarter software and much more powerful computers to run it. And where is Voice Control? Artificial Intelligence? Why can't I ask my PC, "Computer, define epucious", and have it answer me? Why are we still using keyboards and mice? Where are the touch sensitive or gesture sensitive displays that will replace them? Why do I still need an Excel how to book next to me to create complex spreadsheets?
We have a long way to go.... a long way.

    • Yes, progress is slow on some basics

I agree and have often felt impatient about the same items -- the same slow progress can be seen in the automobile industry.
I think the breakthrough, if it happens, will require a spectacular advance in applied AI, probably in war, traffic management or some other large-scale but mundane set of problems.

  • Who's in control?

This reminds me of all the talk about attention data. The biggest question is who is able to control the data that is being gathered. I wouldn't want a Google or Amazon to be able to have so much information about me, even if it was used to help me make better decisions or to know myself better.
And when you, or Mark Anderson I should say, talk about involving health and financial information, there are some very serious privacy concerns that are brought up. Data is never that secure, and when all the data (qualitative and quantitative) about a person is already aggregated in one place, bad things are sure to happen-- no matter who has the data.

    • Who's in control is the real question.

I agree that this needs to have controls on this. I don't want anyone to have more of my info than they have now. This could turn into a Big Brother situation in the wrong hands. What if I don't like their recommendations?

  • Welcome to Orwell's world

You have the right to speak, but only to The Computer.
You have the right to meet people, but only through The Computer.
You have the right to protest, but only to The Computer.
    We have the knowledge.
If you don't pay the billing, you cannot get the knowledge; The knowledge blongs to those that pay to get the access to The Computer.
if youdon't pay your billing, you'll be antisocial. Antisocials are banned from the community of our users. Good citizens pay their billing.
We have the ight to choose who you want to meet. We have the right to choose which opinion better matches your profile.
You must trust The Computer, because He has the knowledge.
You must protect and acclaim The Computer for providing you accesses to so many other citizens through The Computer, that match your profile.
Those that pay their billing for The Computer are happy and form a great community.
Those that keep outside the Computer don't meet people. They don't want knowledge. They are nothing.

There's nothing better in the world than the knwoledge that The Computer provides to you without limitation.

You must not seek to know who controls The Computer and how the money of your billing is used, because The Computer provides you with all your needs. Attempts to discover is a danger for the survival of the community that needs The Computer; they are terrorist.

Terrorists merit death. Only The Computer has the truth. Believe in The Computer as you believe in Good.

    ...

Nightmare? No, a reality promoted by very large companies whose profits will progressively go to a reduced number of people. Humanity becoming slave of a few people, hidden through a technological fence.

POINT 1/. IN 1900 IT TOOK 5 DAYS FOR STANDARD MAIL TO GO FROM VANCOUVER,B.C. TO FLORIDA -IN 2000 IT TAKES AN AVERAGE OF 7-9 DAYS--COMPUTERS, THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT ADVANCES - PROGRESS???? POINT 2/. IN THE 1960's -70's , WHEN WE WENT TO THE BANK, LINES WERE NOT TOO BAD, NORMAL SERVICE TOOK ABOUT 2 MINUTES,PLUS THERE WAS PERSONAL SERVICE IF ANYTHING WENT WRONG, WHICH RARELY HAPPENED--TODAY SERVICE TAKES A COUPLE OF MINUTES IF NOTHING GOES WRONG, EXCEPT ABOUT ONE IN FOUR TIMES IT DOES-THEN IT CAN TAKE SEVERAL HOURS FOR SERVICE-RARELY PERSONAL-COMPUTERS WE THANK YOU FOR THE ADVANCES--PROGRESS??. I CAN LIST MANY MORE SIMILAR INSTANCES..WHAT KIND OF MORONS WOULD THINK THAT BIGGER IS BETTER, WHEN IT IS PROVED OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT BIGGER IS WORSE? ALL THAT BIGGER DOES IS MAKE MORE CRACKS FOR THINGS TO FALL INTO..AS LONG AS NO ONE IS MADE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRACKS AND THOSE WHO FALL INTO THEM THE SYSTEM IS DESTINED TO CRASH.
