A next big thing: StreamBase

A next big thing: StreamBase

Summary: During my time at Demo last week I talked to Mike Stonebraker, who is an authentic database and computer science pioneer. He is credited with creating Ingres, Postgres, and Illustra database technology, and now is setting his sights on handling streaming, real-time data with his new company, StreamBase Systems.

  • This concept is not new

I applaud Mr. Stonebreaker for bringing attention to the important concept of real-time data analysis. However, the concept is not new. DC Systems (www.dcsystems.com) developed real-time data analysis software in 1991. We, like StreamBase, found that traditional databases were an order of magnitude too slow. Our approach was to develop memory-resident database technology. The software has been used in the electric utility industry to monitor and control the delivery of electric power. It was also applied to a trading system on the Pacific Exchange and Chicago Board Options Exchange. I am happy to see that this area of technology is beginning to receive some attention. I only wish that I had the same VC and PR contacts as StreamBase!

  • RFID input feeds + 24/7 Realtime global surveillance!

Yeah, implant these microchips in our right hand or
foreheads already so we can live in peace and security!
Besides, I'm tired of reaching for my wallet just to pay for
something or provide identification. How much longer do
we have left in our carefree, make believe, unsecured and
desperate for digital enslavement society do we have yet?

Lets keep these kinds of technologies on the burner and
start up those automated sheep herding style profiling and
tracking databases too! Aahhh, just smelling the last little
bit of "free" ai r.......... sublime.
