Amazon said Tuesday that it will move up the shipping date from May 3 to April 27 for its ad-supported Kindle with Special Offers.

In its statement earlier this month, Amazon projected a shipping date of May 3 for the $114 Kindle with ads. On Tuesday, CFO Tom Szkutak said that the latest Kindle will ship Wednesday.

On a conference call, Szkutak said:

One thing that we're doing -- obviously, you probably saw the launch related to -- the announcement related to Kindle's special offers, we actually will start shipping tomorrow. The team did a nice job of moving the dates up from several days from now to start shipping tomorrow.

  • I don't think many people will buy this.

It's only slightly cheaper than the full price. Now, if it cost half as much they might get some buyers.

I'm with you. I've no idea why anyone would pay almost full price and still get ads.

  • Micro discount for the annoyance

Sorry, but I don't see how a miserable $25 discount will entice people to buy an ad "infected" device instead of getting the non-ad version.

If the offer for the ad supported version was for $50 or less then I could see a benefit over the annoyance. But a miserable $25 discount is just plain ridiculous.

They would be better off to sell ad-supported books. At least if you buy the book, they can target to the ads to the interest area of the book. That would make the ads more valuable as well.
