Amazon tops most visited retail sites globally in June

By | August 17, 2011, 11:44am PDT

Summary: Amazon was the supreme leader of online retail sites worldwide in June — at least in terms of visitors.

Amazon sites attracted the largest audience worldwide of selected global retail and auction sites during the month of June, according to a new survey from comScore. That breaks down to more than 282 million visitors, or 20.4 percent of the worldwide Internet population.

eBay did pretty well for itself as well to secure second place with 223.5 million visitors (16.2 percent). China’s Alibaba.com found itself in the third spot with 156,780 unique visitors (11.3 percent) in the month of June, Apple.com’s worldwide sites collectively ranked fourth with 134,296 visitors (9.7 percent) and Japan’s Rakuten rounded out the top five at 57.8 million visitors (4.2 percent).

Gian Fulgoni, comScore’s co-founder and chairman, explained in the study that part of the reason as to why Amazon and other North American-based online retailers have grown to be so dominant in this field is that while retail e-commerce has grown into a “$150+ billion annual industry in the U.S., it still presents enormous upside opportunity across much of the globe.”

However, it’s a different story when you break down the percentages by region. Here’s a look:

Amazon no longer reigns supreme in North America as Wal-Mart actually garnered many more visitors. Of course, that number significantly dropped off elsewhere around the world.

Traffic rates also shot up for Alibaba and Rakuten in the Asia Pacific region, MercadoLibre in Latin America, as well as for Otto Gruppe and Groupe PPR in Europe. None of these Internet retailers made much of an impact at all in the Middle East and Africa, with maybe the exception of Apple if you want to stretch numbers. One could even argue that Amazon and Apple had the most even spreads possible across the board.
