AOL acquires Thing Labs to follow up TechCrunch, 5min purchase

By | September 28, 2010, 1:43pm PDT

Fresh from its acquisition of TechCrunch, AOL picked up Thing Labs, a social software company.

With Thing Labs, AOL has three tuck-in acquisitions in just a few hours (Techmeme). Thing Labs is known for its Brizzly social software. Earlier Tuesday, AOL bought 5min Media, a video syndication platform.

AOL said it will take Brizzly and allow its users to share and discover content. AOL will integrate Brizzly with its Lifestream platform, which aggregates social networks and integrates them with AIM.

Thing Labs CEO Jason Shellen and Christopher Wetherell, vice president of product and engineering, will lead AOL’s AIM products.

Brad Garlinghouse, president of AOL’s consumer applications group, said the acquisition was also about grabbing talent.

We have to fundamentally change the way we think about the consumer experience and the team at Thing Labs has a vision and a track record of success that we think will help truly transform the messaging space.

Thing Labs was founded in June 2008.
