Apple: 37.04 million iPhones sold in Q1

By | January 24, 2012, 1:37pm PST

Summary: Apple posted all-time record sales for its iPhone, iPad and Mac lines, including more than 37 million iPhones and 15.43 million iPads sold during the last quarter.

Apple was expected to post a strong showing for its first fiscal quarter earnings release on Tuesday, courtesy of the iPhone 4S, and those iPhone sales came through.

Apple reported a fiscal first quarter net income of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 a share (statement). Non-GAAP earnings were $14.03 a share on a revenue of $46.33 billion.

Wall Street was expecting fiscal first quarter earnings of $10.08 a share on revenue of $38.85 billion.

More so, Apple posted all-time record sales for its iPhone, iPad and Mac lines. Here’s a snapshot of the number of units sold for each brand during the last quarter:

  • 37.04 million iPhones sold, a 128 percent increase over the first fiscal quarter of 2011
  • 15.43 million iPads sold, a 111 percent increase
  • 5.2 million Macs sold, a 26 percent increase

The only one that saw a significant decline was the iPod unit, with 15.4 million iPods sold — a 21 percent decline from the year-ago quarter.

CEO Tim Cook commented in prepared remarks:

We’re thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs. Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.

For the outlook, Apple is predicting a revenue of $32.5 billion at the end of the second fiscal quarter with earnings at $8.50 per share.

  • Congratulations Apple
It isn't very surprising that sales are so good considering there is no real competition in the iPhone and iPad markets.

Oops, I meant to say smartphone and tablet markets.

Ah, gotta love ZDNet's filters. I am not being allowed to post these links but search daringfireball for ipad_dominance from July 2011:
"Or as Marco Arment wrote almost seven months ago, there still really is no "tablet" market ??? just an iPad market."

Search ZDNet for David Morgenstern's piece about Apple iPad to gain traction in SMB market in 2012 from NDP study:
What the buyers really mean by "tablets" is Apple iPad.

I'm not the only one claiming that there is no tablet market. I have some very fine company. Do you believe John Gruber and David Morgenstern should grow up too?

It's always fun to read NonZealot's (sorry - "toddybottom's") posts after there's good news about Apple. He seems to consider it to be a personal affront. He's been this way for a while.

I'm sorry, I don't understand.. He said congratulations, he said that Apple dominates the two main markets they compete in.

    Do you disagree with him?

  • Hey Pete, don't tell that to me
    @Pete "athynz" Athens
I'm just Todd. My readership numbers in the 10s. You should tell that to David Morgenstern and John Gruber, both have stated that there is absolutely no competition to the iPad (I tried to link to them above) and both have readerships in the millions. If you feel that strongly that there actually is competition in the iPad... oops, tablet market then you need to convince the ones who are listened to by millions of people. Convincing me that there is competition won't do anything substantial to spread your version of the truth. You let me know when John Gruber and David Morgenstern believe there is competition. When that happens, I'll reconsider my position. Deal?

Apple is an absolute juggernaut, crushing the competition with their unrivaled innovation and incredible design. As someone that bought in a $12 share years ago, I'm a very happy camper. Though I did suggest when Apple was at $196 share that the the fine members of zdnet buy in. I don't know if any of you did, but you would've made a tremendous rate of return.

Its kinda funny, the day I suggested that, someone posted back that investing in Microsoft might be a better idea. Mmmmmm, lets see, Apple went from $196 to $450, microsoft from what, $25 to $25!!
