Apple afterthoughts: The real news is what wasn't announced

Let’s recap, shall we? Apple’s news event is over and we now know that there’s a new version of iTunes and some tweaks to the lineup of iPods. Here’s what there isn’t:

No Tablet Mac. Well, that shouldn’t come as a big surprise, given that the buzz around the launch of a tablet Mac started to fizzle a while back.

No iPod cameras. It’s tough to say whether the rumors over the past week or so about technical problems with the camera that was supposed to go in the iPod were true or not. Aside from a video camera feature in the iPod Nano - now a competitor to the FlipCam - there was no mention of a camera in any of the iPods.

No major price drops. Sure, the lower-end iPod Touch dropped by $30 but everything else was a capacity upgrade for the same price. Does that count as a price drop? Personally, I think not.

No upgrades to the IPhone - which wasn’t expected either, seeing how this “It’s Only Rock n Roll” event clearly seemed to be about music.

No real news. Sure, there were some cool new features in the all new iTunes 9 and I plan to do some upgrading to my home machines right away. But even the return of Steve Jobs to the center-stage was more exciting than some of the other headlines.

The critics are already chiming in - many on my liveblog post this morning - about this event really being more of a non-event. And, for the most part, it’s hard to argue against that assessment. Clearly, Apple needed to make some sort of announcement about its holiday lineup and early September seems to be the time of the year that the company chooses to release news. But the fact that this particular event devoted so much time to partner demos of new iPod Touch video games and a full demo of iTunes kind of offered a hint that that was as good as it was going to get.

And it was.

But make no mistake - the iPod remains the 800-pound Gorilla among portable music devices with nearly 74 percent market share. And little things like new colors and small tweaks here and there will be enough to bring the kids - and parents - into the stores to take a look this holiday season.

Right about now, Mac fans are likely thinking about the next big announcement, traditionally made as part of MacWorld in January. Only problem is that Apple is no longer affiliated with the annual trade show so don’t expect some big keynote speech and major announcement about a tablet Mac there. Tech bloggers - myself included - still think early 2010 will be the time frame for a Tablet Mac announcement but I guess we’ll have to wait for another event invitation to fall in our inboxes.

Sure, today’s event may have been more of a non-event - and there’s a risk that the next Apple announcement could also be a disappointment. But until Apple falls off the pedestal that tech geeks have put the company on, I’ll continue to attend and write about their news events.

That's the problem...

When you listen to the rumour mill...

Apple launched much more than it promised! Heck, as usual, they didn't mention a single thing.

The problem is, what they did launch is far below what the fanboy rumour mill's wild imaginings came up with.

I just don't get why people are so disappointed when Apple don't launch products they never even hinted they were developing...

Yes, I'd like to see an iTablet, but I wasn't disappointed when it didn't turn up, because I wasn't expecting it.

An iPod Touch with camera? Meh. Why? I have an iPhone 3GS, but if I want to take photos, I'll take along my Canon Ixus or EOS. Cameras in 'phones are useful for the odd snapshot, but I wouldn't use one for anything I really want to capture. You just can't get decent optics in a 'phone case. Even the lens on my Canon Ixus isn't man enough, in some circumstances, for the 12mp sensor.

If you are carrying an iPod Touch, you are probably carriny a mobilephone or a camera anyway, I just don't see the point in it.

800 lb Gorilla

The Gorilla not being mentioned is why the Beatles aren't in iTunes. This
was the alignment of the planets, the day of days to bring Apple Corps
library into the digital age of distribution.

Apple Corp has gone to court a couple of times with Apple. The first being over the name Apple but more importantly the second where Apple said they would not sell music, then turned around and started iTunes and started selling music.

Apple Corps
dheady@... 10th Sep 2009
Yes Apple Corps has gone to court over Apple's entry into music as way
back when Apple Computer signed an agreement that they could use the
Apple name and similar logo if they refrained from competing in the
music industry. But frankly, aside from the occasional return to the
feeding trough Apple Corps has been in a good relationship for years. In
fact Paul McCartney was asked when the library would go on iTunes and
he hinted that talks were in progress. Talks to make it happen not an
acrimonious law suit. Just sayin'

Apple puts a camera in the iPod nano and you write "No iPod
cameras." This clearly reveals your anti-Apple, pro-M$ bias.

Did you ever stop to think Jobs would demand that the iPod
touch receive a 3 megapixel auto-focus camera, to
complement the similar camera found in the iPhone 3GS? And
maybe, just maybe all of the available versions of such a
camera just don't fit in the slimmer iPod touch case?

Not a camera
SamDiaz 9th Sep 2009
Mr/Ms. Dogbreath1

Apple did not put a camera in the iPod Nano. It was a video camera, just like the flipcam. I'm sure you can save still pics from the video clip - but it's not a still camera in the Nano... The rumor was that cameras (still cameras) were coming to the iPod line...

Also had to chuckle that you would consider me to be anti-Apple, pro-M$. You must be a new reader because most of the people who comment on this blog hate me for being so pro-Apple/anti-M$.

So, to you I say: WELCOME... Hope you become a long-time reader.

Mic Speaker
dunraven 9th Sep 2009
I'd been looking for an MP3 player that can record and play back with no extra hardware. Insofar, the iPod Nano announcement actually may make the material difference for me to get one. So, it depends on what you're after whether this was a big announcement.

Mic Speaker
AllGeek2Me 9th Sep 2009
I've got a Creative Zen Nano Plus.
It has a Mic, headphones only, a line-in w/proper cable, FM stereo (recordable). So the hw already exists. Not a big one, not even close. The real question might be " Has Sony really profitted by making thier gear proprietary, or can they justify their high prices because of it? It's not rocket science. Just look at all the compatible gear made for Sony. (Ooops! Most of my gear is Sony.. what am I doing?)
my 2? Cdn.

recording and playback
cnet@... 10th Sep 2009
Sansa Fuze records from its FM radio or from its internal microphone and plays back the WAV file it creates. Cost is about 1/3 a Nano depending upon GB capacity. Buy a small capacity model Fuze and add your own micro SHDC card.
I am just your average Joe consumer but that networking
with iTunes maybe a bit of Trojan horse. Apple needs a
system of being able to send content to any media device
(TV, stereo, other computers, iPhone, Apple TV) in the
consumer's home. Some of this can be done in a somewhat
handicapped way but this maybe an evolution of a tech net
that allows families to share and view media more seamlessly.
For example- I know that I would like to be able to play my
Apple TV on various TV's in the house but can't. Audio is
no problem of course as long as you have the Airport
extender. Perhaps this sharing ability with iTunes 9 is the
start of something more.
Again- Joe consumer here- educate me with options if
you'd like happy

One other note- if the iTablet does exist- local
audio/video streaming and sharing would be a critical
selling point.

Come on, Sam! Your favorite-Apple-thingy-that-you-
designed-in-your-head didn't get announced? Aw, too bad! As
I've said before, no other company on the planet has so many
jillions of people helping it design its products as Apple.
Everyone has this ultimate golly-gee-whiz gadget in mind that
they're eagerly anticipating, and when it doesn't get
announced---doom and gloom sets in.

How realistic is it to think that an earth-shaking new product
will be unveiled at each and every event? So this one was like
Snow Leopard--evolutionary, not revolutionary. So what?

Well, maybe FM in an iPod is kinda revolutionary.........

The Leica M9 and X1 intro this morning was nowhere as deftly choreographed, but at least it had substantial products to announce. It even had its own music star in the person of Seal...

Tablets and Beatles
Harvey the Rabbit Updated - 10th Sep 2009
I'm not surprised that Apple didn't announce a tablet, for two reasons.
First, the tablet only exists as a rumor so far. Second, this was a music
event, and if there were a tablet, this wouldn't be the venue to
announce it.

I'm not surprised that Apple didn't [prematurely] announce that
Beatles music would be available on iTunes. Yoko Ono already said
that Beatles music will be available on iTunes, but not just yet.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about the Beatles, and I remember when
they were on Ed Sullivan. (Hey, I even remember the Ed Sullivan show!)

On a timeline between "I'm in the Mood for Love" and today, "I Want to
Hold Your Hand" is at about the halfway mark.

It was a non event for me
jscott418 10th Sep 2009
I am sure Apple fans clamored over the fact Steve made a appearance. But the products really did not woo anyone to burn up the internet to buy them. I was glade my iPod Touch got a 3.1 software upgrade. I hope it fixes some WIFI issues. I was afraid I would have to shell out for the new one because it would have a camera. That's what the rumor was. Well I guess I can save my money for that Tablet PC that probably is on the same rumor as the camera. Ain't happening anytime soon.
Yes, for me it was a non event and Apple should really consider dropping these events unless they have something totally new. That way their won't be a let down from all the false rumor's when nothing actually becomes of them.

Beatles on iTunes won't take long
library assistant 10th Sep 2009
After all, MJ's will supposedly gave them back their music he bought. Then there's the Beatles (limited edition) Rock Band for video games that has recently been announced which shows that things are starting to move forward. Yellow Submarine's next stop: maybe iTunes.
For me the best thing about this event was iTunes 9 and the
ability, FINALLY, to be able to sort out apps on screens on my
iPhone. The previous method was outright laborious. The
method used now is slick. Not as intuitive as I'd normally like
to see from Apple, but enough that I didn't need to read the
directions. {Historic hallmark of a Mac user is shrink wrapped
manuals, well back when they actually printed and included
manuals)
