Apple at CES? Don't believe it.

I wouldn’t believe any buzz that might surface this weekend about Apple looking to “go large” at CES next year, now that Steve Jobs and company have dumped Macworld. No way. First of all, how do you give credit to something like that when the only source of information is a blogger who’s citing an unnamed source with “friends who work at Apple.” (No link love from me. I’m sure you’ll find it if you Google it.)

Come on. Really? Cubicle gossip? I know the Apple rumor mill tends to run wild with all sorts of crazy predictions. But this one makes no sense - at all. Why would Apple opt for CES, a venue where even the largest tech companies struggle to be heard above the noise, when it was the king of Macworld? Why haul all the way out to Vegas and pay travel expenses for the staffing entourage when Moscone is just a short hop up 280 from the home office in Cupertino? And what would Apple gain by making a splash at CES? Customers? (Got ‘em and still growing.) International exposure? (Is there anyone on the globe that hasn’t heard of Apple or the iPod?) Press attention? (Haha. I won’t even make a comment on that one.)

I’ll say it one more time: trade shows are so 20th century - at least for a company like Apple. Sure, I think CES has some life left in it still. I’m not so sure about Macworld, though. And some trade shows still make sense. OracleWorld, LinuxWorld, Dreamforce and IDF are a few that I hit in 2008 and they seemed to be attracting their specifically-targeted audiences.

Also see: What does Apple’s MacWorld departure say about future of trade shows?

Lastly, I was originally going to not post anything on this rumor and help spread it. But I decided that, if people Google this rumor over the weekend, I’d prefer that a counter-argument post also be listed in the results.

I think it is still quite likely, RIM had and stuck to the same reason with their on WES show NOT to make the CES PLAY but it worked out really well for them, and just about everyone else who's anyone in CE (whether or not they do their own show) STAND and are counted there, why not Apple?

Good Call, Sam

This ridiculous fantasy is the product of a person whose
financial well being depended on generating unreasonable
expectations and hype that leads up to MWSF. Apple has
been his meal ticket, and now Apple is taking the hit and
refusing to play this no-win game with him or others of his
ilk.

Good on you for not supplying the link.

I think the source of this rumor is that several vendors
have been floating the idea of setting up a Mac or Apple
Pavilion at CES, which is a capital idea. Hell, IDG might
want to consider selling the Mac World trademark to CES.
Personally, I'd rather visit SF than Vegas, even if SF in
January is a bit colder than Vegas is.
There is much more people than what you think, this might be true in the US or the UK but outside ignorance is widespread.

Very True

Remember that tribe that was discovered this past year in the
Amazon Rainforest? Never heard of an iPod. They were very
interested in getting an iPhone, however.

Ignorance...
Jediguardian 10th Jan 2009
...is everywhere my friend, but it's different. It's more than that... not everybody is interested in Apple, iPod or technology. People use technology to make their lives easier, but never think about it. Even in the USA I know many people who won't give a rat's ass about all that stuff. It's lack of interest. I have 3 iPod players, but I couldn't care less if apple is out of the market tomorrow... some other merchant will take Apple's place in the food-chain.
This matter only to geeks - exception made with me: I'm a geek and I don't care- normal people won't lose sleep over this and neither should you.

They are ot interested anymore...

...since they died from a germ carried to their village by white men. What a tragedy! Less customers for Apple's iPhone...
