Apple iPad 2 reportedly coming: Will consumers wait?

Apple iPad 2 reportedly coming: Will consumers wait?

Summary: Consumers could choose to wait for the next iPad 2 if they believe a DigiTimes report. Current iPad owners could also chafe at a launch of the iPad 2 a few months after the holidays.

Tweaked this post to fix a few screwups on my part.

Foxconn, the Chinese company that makes Apple's iPad, reportedly has been told to ramp up production for a next-gen device. According to DigiTimes, Foxconn has been told to ship the iPad 2 in the next 100 days with initial shipments of 400,000 to 600,000 units.

These sources point to a February shipment of Apple's next-gen iPad with a launch in April.

The timing of this story is problematic to some degree. If the report is true---there are no guarantees of that---Apple is planning to launch a new improved iPad just two months four months after the Christmas selling season.

Will consumers hold out for the next iPad? And will consumers who just got an iPad chafe at a launch of the iPad 2 relatively soon after the holidays?

I've mentioned the iPad 2 to a few Apple fans and the reaction was mixed. Some folks said that Apple wouldn't launch a next-gen iPad so soon.

The other risk with all of this iPad 2 talk is that consumers will wait on current iPad orders. There is ample supply of iPads in stores. Apple clearly wants to move these units out of the way.

Will talk of an iPad 2 give you pause before buying the current iPad?

  • It won't sell well in that case

Unless all the Apple weirdos abandon the $800 1st gen iPad in droves. If that thing sold as well as everyone is saying, that alot of money just to throw away and spend all over again.

Well that is a definite possibility. The same people that had to get the new iPhone every year even if it meant paying an extra fee will be more than happy to do this. After all it will be the latest shiny gadget from Apple that they will call more magical than the first.

Even those who early adopted/switched to the latest phone are based usually on early subsidized offers by AT&T (and I was one).
Don't see that as an offer for the iPad2....

Sounds like you can't afford to buy cutting edge tools. Too bad.

What? What kind of statement is that. Just makes you sound like some of the Apple fanboys that think because Apple products are expensive that they somehow are that much better? I have an iPhone 4 and aside from the bigger screen there is nothing an iPad can do that my iPhone can't. It is not a matter of affording it, it is that it offers me no advantage and I would hardly call the iPad "cutting edge".

Bob... shh... he still thinks the newness of his latest Apple acquisition has something to do with his manhood. Don't smash his image of himself, it's the only thing he's got left.

Yeah I guess you're right. It is amazing how many people that still feel that owning an Apple gadget or computer is some sort of status symbol or something. I know that Apple usually uses higher quality parts compared to some models offered by OEMs but there is nothing special about them overall. I just upgraded the Ram in the Macbook I use for work from 2GB to 4GB and it had the same brand (hynix) ram as the Dell Latitude I also upgraded. Thats the only difference is many OEMs have different classes of computers usually divided up into consumer class and business class with the business class usually being of higher quality. Apple just makes all their limited models the same and charges for it too.

Seriously? Okay dude, first of all the iPad - while it is a really cool device - is NOT cutting edge. Second you come off as some sort of pretentious trolling elitist prick with a Napoleonic complex which is commonly referred to as "mactardism". It's asinine comments like this that make mac users look like jerks and make the ABMer's points for them.

    • Actually, it's pretty brilliant of them

@Cylon Centurion 0005. You know that people/parents won't want to disappoint anyone at Christmas, so hold off on iPad 2 until current stock is sold off thru the holidays.

Then those same people will purchase the new version in Feb or March as it has added features. two iPads, and two iTunes account now as opposed to just the one.

A pretty smart marketing move, IMHO

        Very poor marketing.
They are robbing from future sales to build current sales.
For a same consumer point item that is not a risk adverse move. I agree that this could be an announcement for a future launch.

      • What would be the difference

zenwalker? If they released during the holidays, people would pass up on V1 to get V2. It would be the same amount of sales, but leave older stock sitting on shelves, likely being sold off at a reduced price just to move them.

Buy holding off untill Feb (after the typical 30 day exchange period to keep people from "trading up") they move the current stock, and let future sales worry about themselves.

      • RE: Apple iPad 2 reportedly by February: Will consumers wait?

        @John Zern

Don't forget the people who bought an iPhone 3GS AFTER the iPhone 4 came out, because it was reasonably priced... iPad v1 will still sell, only at a reasonable price now that iPad v2 is the overpriced baking sheet that is available.

while releasing v2 would have increased overall sales in the holidays (both units would have been purchased, more v1's, at the new low price, than what is actually being sold currently, plus additional v2's at the current or even higher price than the current v1's). it is all about the numbers, waiting until feb or later makes apple look less like they are trying to catch-up after releasing an inferior product, and more like their normal annual upgrade path.

Another note to remember, iOS was made for tablets, they only came out with the iPhone because marketing decided a phone would sell better in the current (then) market, so they squished the iOS on to the iPhone gen 1, future updates were designed to enhance the phone parts, which is why the iPad was last to get 4.2.

(does this mean that instead of calling it the 'Max-iPad' we will have to refer to it as the 'Max-iPad +'?)

False. iOS was not "made for tablets." It was designed for iPhones and then adapted to the tablet-like iPad.

"future updates (of iOS?) were designed to enhance the phone parts, which is why the iPad was last to get 4.2."

The iPad is not a 'phone; it can only be used as a 'phone with VOIP software. Given the absence of "phone parts" in an iPad, this would seem to be a non sequitur.

@john_gillespie. How's that buffer working for that cutting edge Iphone 4 antenna job? Now there's some cutting edge for you. ;O) I like my cutting edge Droid.

In my case, given that I have used the iPad quite heavily since it's purchase, I can't feel that I've thrown my money away. If the new iPad offers any features that I find attractive enough, I may purchase one and pass my current unit on to a family member. If no compelling features, I'll continue to use my current unit.

Admittedly, I only spent $500 for the iPad not the $800 you mention since I saw no need for 3G nor more than 16GB of memory for what I saw myself as using the iPad for. Most likely, I'll be able to continue using the Camera Connection kit with a new iPad so I'll save a few dollars there.

  • RE: Apple iPad 2 reportedly by February: Will consumers wait?

The current iPad is drool worthy, but I want a lighter tablet with at least one USB port; Android is a possibility. If Apple waits too long, it's a sure thing their competition won't.

@trickytom3 Way to go out bad. I haven't seen anything bad in his reply. As a matter of fact he complimented the Ipad but pointed out what he desired while addressing some facts that the others will and have done. "Get a life" smells like a fanboy reply.
