Apple makes contact: 'iOS 5 bug causes battery issue'

Summary: Apple finally speaks out over the battery issues some customers have suffered with iOS 5 powered devices: In short, there's a fix, but not for a while.

SHARE:

Apple has made contact with the outside world to confirm that iOS 5, its latest mobile operating system, released only a fortnight ago, is causing battery issues with iPhones.

"A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices", the company told AllThingsD, adding: "We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."

Apple did not comment beyond the statement.

The Cupertino-based giant is seeding a minor update to developers, iOS 5.0.1, which amongst other things will address the battery life issue.

Also in the update, multitasking gestures will be fixed for the first-generation iPad, resolve some issues with Documents in the Cloud, and improve Siri for Australian users of the iPhone 4S.

But many will be angered that the update "will take weeks", as many struggle to gain any more than 12 hours out of their iPhones in a single day.

Apple has been deathly silent over the battery issues, which threatened to replicate the issues that the company had with the iPhone 4 in 'Antennagate'. But the company's response has been less than ideal, as it has not publicly acknowledged a problem until now -- over two weeks since the problems began to emerge.

Within a few days of antenna-related issues reported in the press with the iPhone 4, the late Steve Jobs discussed with reporters at a special press event how the company would fix the problem -- not only with the smartphone itself, but its reputation amongst its customers; something the company holds seemingly ahead of anything else.

Users instead were left to scramble for their own solutions, with many finding resolve in a location-based setting deep within the operating system. Thousands of users left comments of anger and frustration, along with tips and advice for fellow iOS 5 users in the Apple support forums since the problems were first reported.

Despite the problems with battery, and some other minor bugs along the way, the iPhone 4S has been the most popular selling smartphone the company has ever produced, selling millions in the first week alone. Sprint and AT&T reached record sale highs.

???A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices???, the company told AllThingsD, adding: ???We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.???

    Let me translate:

A large number of vocal users are experiencing terrible battery life on their iOS 5 devices. We have found multiple bugs that all effect battery life and we are desperately trying to fix them all so an iOS device will last 8 hours. Once we manage to get it back to 10 hours we'll release bug fixes in a month or two.

Why does my WP7 phone last 3 days (and it's not a riddle)?

      @tonymcs@...

Your WP7 phone lasts 3 days (if true) because you can't do anything with it.

I suspect that very few users are really bothered by the lower battery life from iOS5. I noticed it with my iPhone 4, but it still easily lasts my typical 18 hour days.

Since WP7 has built-in features the iToy can only supply as apps and also links seamlessly with coporate systems as well as all the usual bells and whistles, I really don't know what you are talking about.

@jorjitop I suggest you learn more about WP7 before commenting. It does far more than iPhone as it has live tiles being pushed information on a regular basis even when not using an app (iPhone style).

@jorjitop 18 hours is awful for a device with such a small screen. My Titan with a 4.7" screen to power does 28 hours. That's with around 1-2 hours web browsing and lots of data coming into live tiles.

@tonymcs@... Battery life for my iPhone 4 is the same as before iOS 5. And it last a little more than 2 days with constant 3G, internet access, etc...

Good to know - still beat you by a day with the same etc - you can also add WiFI, Blutooth, location services etc.

Good to hear. My WP7 phone has all of the above plus WiFI, Blutooth and location services all on - still beat you by a day ;-)

@atari_z No it isn't, I ran both the 4 and 4s side by side, the 4 had iOS 4 and was upgraded to 5... Battery life was immediately noticeably lower and I could literally watch the percentage count down.

Once I turned of a bunch of stuff the battery improved dramatically and I was able to go the whole day with heavy use. 2 Games of NBA Jam dropped the battery between 15 and 20% with other features off it dropped about 10% playing the same game.

    • Why? Why indeed?

Probably because you threaten it. You probably suggest it's going to have a bad experience with a salacious kangaroo unless it makes the power last a bit longer.

    • 'Small' is small; there up to 10 million iPhone 4S devices already sold

@tonymcs@... so few thousand people of that number is still small. However, the bugs are bad, so Apple has to fix it; lets see.

  • This cannot be true!

Matt created a gift list with iPhone 4S being #1. ;-)

On a serious note my son complained to me (not Apple) since he did not expect that the latest and greatest model has worse battery life than his iPhone 3GS.

On a side note - my son was eagerly waiting for iPhone 5 that in my eyes confirms the fact that most "new" iPhone buyers are not that new.

nope my WP7 keyboard - you know the one that has icons on it you don't have to search for - is still there and working fine/

Nope my WP7 keyboard - you know the one with standard emoticons, rather than the "special" ones you have to search for on the iphone and the great word prediction - is still there ;-)

Early adopters will always suffer. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. If you want to be on the cutting edge you must assume some risk. It's even worse with Apple since everything they release is kept secret until launch day. Other tech companies release devices and software to testers before launch.

Whats with the WP7 lovers being vocal all of a sudden. A good phone implementation but a day late and dollar short. MS needed the phone 18 months ago.

@nqy because people should know there is an great alternative to the laggy battery draining Android phones or the faulty antenna/battery iPhones?

Come back next year and say they are too late. Should be interesting....
