Apple said its App Store has now passed the 2 billion download mark, a little more than 2 months after reaching the 1.5 billion milestone.

The company (statement, Techmeme) is indicating that its App Store growth seems to be accelerating. To wit:

  • The App Store has 85,000 apps available;
  • 2 billion downloads;
  • And 125,000 developers.

On July 14 Apple disclosed the following:

  • 65,000 apps available;
  • 1.5 billion downloads;
  • And 100,000 developers.

Not bad for two months work.

  • How many are free?

    I've downloaded dozens and discarded most and have yet to pay for one. So what is it supposed to mean?

    • It means

      there are a lot of iPhones and there are a lot of people who want to use
      apps on their iPhone, and therefore there is the potential for you to make
      good money if you can create an iPhone app that people are willing to
      pay for.

      It doesn't mean anything more than that.
