Apple's Cook: iPad is 'undisputed' top tablet worldwide

The iPad is everywhere, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook while speaking at the "Let's Talk iPhone" event on Tuesday from Apple's Cupertino, Calif. headquarters.

Apple's iOS tablet has proven itself a force to be reckoned with in both the consumer and enterprise space. Here's a snapshot of where it is being deployed:

  • 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies are testing or deploying iPads
  • Over 80 percent of U.S. hospitals are now testing or piloting the iPad
  • 40 pound flight books are replaced by the iPad
  • Every state in the U.S. has an iPad deployment program either in place or in pilot mode
  • 1,000 schools (ranging from the grade levels to college) have a 1:1 program

Additionally, Apple has now sold over 250 million iOS (i.e. iPhones, iPods, iPads together) worldwide. Apple's senior vice president of iOS software Scott Forstall also reiterated that iOS is the number one mobile operating system with 43 percent of the market as of July, according to comScore, with Android following with 33 percent.

Calling the iPad the "undisputed number one tablet" in the world, Cook reportedly went so far as to say that "everyone and their brother" is trying to copy the darn thing, but no one can match the iPad.

At least not yet.

  • iOS is still #1, but how fast Android will catch up, at least formally?

Most of Android phones that are selling are not really capable/used as smartphones (rather as featurephones), hence the share of web browsing and applications use are dramatically lower than formal OS share, but still.
