Apple's Cook: Selling every iPhone 4 we can make despite antenna flap

Summary: Addressing the question of the day, operating chief Tim Cook said on Apple's earnings conference call that the company is selling every iPhone 4 it can make.

If there's any blowback about the iPhone 4 and its antenna hubbub, Tim Cook sure isn't seeing any of it.

Addressing the question of the day, Cook said on Apple's earnings conference call that the company is selling every iPhone 4 it can make. The iPhone along with the iPad and strong demand for Macs propelled Apple's best quarter ever.

Specifically, "the demand for iPhone 4 is absolutely stunning," said Cook. "We are selling every unit we can make currently."

Analysts questioned Cook's take and asked about whether there was any evidence of an online order slowdown for the iPhone 4 since Friday.

Cook said there has been "no slowdown" in order rates online, or any increase in returns.

"My phone is ringing off the hook from people that need more supply," said Cook.

However, Cook did note that it's early to tell the ultimate impact of antennagate. He said "it's hard to tell since we're selling every one we can make."

  • Apple's Cook is just providing evidence in support of an old adage

    • Smart people buy the best products. That's why iPhone 4 sells.

      • @Davewrite: Maybe you have a point, just drop the word 'phone' and...

...(based on your fanboy criteria) you will likely be able to prove that it's the best product.<br><br>However, that leaves you with an even tougher issue to address: <b>Best for what?</b>

@Davewrite except that it lags behind the other phones like the evo 4g and droidx which are the same price or cheaper

@OS Reload - I just love how fools like OS Reload generalize about this. Apple has antenna issues - ha ha their iPhones will not sell now. Their iPhones are selling now? Ha ha, only fools buy them. Millions of fools in the world? Ha ha. Umm. Hmm, where do I go from here?

  • Wasn't this going to be Apple's Vista;-) (nt)

    • Those who claimed that have momentarily lost contact with reality

@Richard Flude<br><br>When they associated the iPhone 4 with Vista they forgot that Apple operates at a higher level, one where common notions of usefulness or fitness for a purpose cease to have any meaning.<br><br>They forgot that Apple has an immense army or fanatical devotees that confer the power to warp reality to meet Apple's ideas of <i>good</i> and <i>bad</i>, <i>right</i> and <i>wrong</i>, <i>beautiful</i> and <i>ugly</i> (an example: a fart is not necessarily a fart, where it comes from is of the utmost importance and to a fanboy those from Jobs smell like roses and taste like candy.)<br><br>To sum things up: Microsoft's only weapon to fight reality is FUD while Apple can warp reality itself. That explains why the iPhone 4 triumphs where Vista fails miserably despite their close resemblance. It is so because Microsoft's FUD is getting weak while the <i>Reality Distortion Field</i> remains very strong.

      • Those "fanatical devotees" must be RICH. lol.

        @OS Reload

you guys always harp that Apple only sells to 'fanatical devotees', well maybe but there sure are a LOT of them or they're RICH as Apple made 15.7 b in revenue (that's more than Msft's last quarter revenue. Although you can't compare quarter to quarter still it's significant). So if msft for approx the same revenue is supposed to sell to Gazillons of people it leads to the fact for Apple to make so much there must be either Gazillons of people who love Apple products or they are rich!

MS RDF is VERY STRONG as can be seen by millions of lemmings who still use an inferior , crash prone virus ridden os called Windows. But in every field where there isn't an entrenched monopoly locked in with Apps and peripherals like Windows, Msft is having it's assed kicked.

  • Ok...

So, what he is saying is that they are selling a defective product as fast as they can make it. Is he bragging?

And, the even bigger question, won't this just compound the damage to their reputation and pocketbook?
    itpro_z
    • Isn't it easier to believe it's selling cause it's GREAT?

      @itpro_z

that press and blogs who are harping on the antenna issue is way overblown?
That hordes of people are buying iPhone 4's cause they find it works great?

The return rate of iPhone 4 is only 1.7%.
(so those who bought them aren't returning them. The Blackberry Tour was reported to have return rates as high as 50% -- RIM refuses to comment but cites 'production issues.)
And no buy one get one free deals like Android and they sell millions.

For those few having issues, apple has generously offered free cases and no restocking fee returns.
      That's why Apple keeps winning.

  • You can fool some of the people

    All of the time apparently.

Having looked at the WP7 tech reviews and downloaded the Windows Phone development system, I'm happy to leave these Apple devotees in their trailing edge sandbox.

Remember Apple can only "innovate" when they can repackage someone else's work. See what happens when they try a brave new approach with an external antenna? This was the direct result of their style overrides function approach.

    • RE: Apple's Cook: Selling every iPhone 4 we can make despite antenna flap

@tonymcs@... And yet the return rate on the iPhone 4 is 1.7%... meaning that 1.7% of people who purchased the iPhone 4 are unsatisfied with it yet on the other hand 98.3% of the ones who purchased the iPhone 4 did not return it meaning that 98.3% are indeed satisfied with the iPhone 4. And given those figures - let's put it in terms of antenna working or not I'd say this is proof that the whole antenna thing is way overblown - which is what I said from the beginning.

Oh and BTW smartphones without an external antenna also are subject to signal degredation... but don't let the facts stop you from spreading FUD. Have fun with your WP7 device which looks like it's taken some pages from Apple's playbook being a closed system and lacks copy and paste... But wait, on the iPhone the lack of copy and paste was a huge issue with the MS Shills and yet on WP7 it's a "feature"

As NZ says "Cue the Double Standards"

@athynz : Meanwhile people are still buying what Jobs admitted to be a defective product [if you offer a fix, you can imply there is a problem].

    • iPhone antenna 8 times more sensetive than usual, so pls no lame bashing

@tonymcs@... : it holds signal as low as -121 Db, contrary to -113 Db in smartphones with usual antenna.

So no, function here is no second goal.

According to jobs, "a challenge for the whole industry", this challenge maybe hit RIM, Samsung, HTC and Nokia, but we don't be frustrated by it except apple. I won't buy iphone 4 although i have planed it. and recommending apple fans purchase an ifunia for their "remarkable 960-by-640 resolution in a 3.5-inch screen".

  • Don't Blame Apple - Blame the Bozos who Buy Apple Crap

It is astonishing how many dim-wits out there will buy anything Apple makes. Don't blame Apple. No one is forcing people to buy Apple crap. They willing fork over their money for it. And stand in line for days to do it. It's so sad it's funny.
